Ishamael | Medical Insurance for Middle Aged People? |
My mom is 59 and can't find any medical insurance with good coverage that isn't priced through the roof. We're hoping someone out there knows something we don't. She is employed as a manager of a restaurant so doesn't qualify for low income. In case it matters, she lives in Texas. Thanks in advance for your help. |

I looked up the premium rates for a city in Texas with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, www.bcbstx.com. $159 a month for the PPO Select Saver plan, $5000 deductible. There are many things covered such as office visits, prescriptions, etc., without having to meet the annual deductible first.
It is a very good plan from what I have read. I happen to have similar coverage in Arizona with the same deductible.
I suggest visiting the Blue Cross site I mentioned above. The prices and description/outline of coverage is on the site, and she can apply online. I am an Arizona agent and would not be able to help you, as I am not licensed in Texas. |

Does your mother’s employer offer a Heath Savings Account (HSA)? An HSA allows you to save money BEFORE Social Security and income taxes are taken out. Your pre-tax dollars are automatically worth 10-40% more than after-tax dollars. You then use those dollars to pay health insurance premiums and pay your deductible.
With an HSA, you are required to enroll in a “qualified” High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). This is health insurance with high deductible amounts, so the monthly premiums are lower than with traditional health insurance. The deductibles aren’t that high. Under federal law, the minimum deductible in a HDHP plan is $$1,100. The advantage, however, is that she does not pay with after-tax dollars, with up to 40% of your income already taken out for taxes. She may have to pay $1,100 a year in doctor bills, medications, and other medical costs, but without the tax-free HSA, she might have had only $660 of those dollars after taxes anyway.
The beauty of the HSA is that if you do not use the money in the account, it is yours to keep. It rolls over from year to year. If the savings are unspent by the time your mother retires, she can withdraw them, tax-free, for any purpose. She can also use your HSA account to pay for long-term care insurance, in case she ever needs round-the-clock care.
To find a qualified HDHP plan or just to compare regular insurance prices, log on to a site like http://www.healthinsurancewiz.com and fill out a request for quote. Good luck! |

Due to her age, it will be more difficult for her to find reasonably priced private insurance. (Especially if she has any medical conditions.)
Unfortunately, her best bet would be to find a new job that comes with medical benefits, if she can't afford the cost of obtaining her own policy. (I suppose having a spouse with medical benefits would work too, but I can't tell from your question whether or not there is a spouse/significant other in the picture.) |

A company called Mega Life is pretty good for self employeed people. For most it is a matter of setting the decutible high so you cover major stuff. Also she can get insurance through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas I believe. It won't be cheap at her age but like I said use a high deductible $5,000 at least and get the drug coverage. |

Nope, there are no secrets here.
Texas does have a high risk state medical group. Due to her age, she's going to be high risk. And I don't know what kind of premium she's looking for, but at her AGE, a FAIR premium is going to be $500 - $600 a month, assuming she doesn't have anything really wrong with her.
It might be more cost effective for her to sit down with a local agent, and see about a high deductible, major medical policy. |

I just placed 2 policies in California where the clients were 61 and 62. Through the California Farm Bureau, the A rated insurance company rated them preferred due to their excellent health. $1750 deductable (stop loss as well) and their premiums were 305$ and 310 per month.
Try joining the Texas Farm Bureau or whatever organization exists in Texas and see what policies would be available to her.
Good health insurance does not have to be expensive. |
