Tulip | Medical benefits went up this year and it feels like I'm taking a pay cut!? |
I need my medical benefits and have found out that the price went up. It takes out a chunk from my check. I get my check direct deposited every Thursday and don't get the actual stub until Friday. I went to check my account to see how much I got paid and it literally almost seemed as if I was short paid hours...up until I got my pay stub.
Should I asked for a raise? Switch jobs? Am I going to experience this elsewhere? I don't feel like I should be penalized because I need medical benefits. Is this old news and I'm just complaining because reality just barely hit me in the face or what? Additional Details Ehh sniff |

Welcome to a very common world. I lose more than 1/3 of my pay to taxes and medical benefits. You can ask for a raise, but you may not get it - especially if you're not due for a review. If you switch jobs you may be left without health insurance for a period of time - unless you COBRA the benefits, and then you'll be in worse shape because you'll be paying full boat and not have any income. |

Most people feel this way these days.
I would encourage your employer to shop out your health plan. Find a broker who can propose a "choice based" healthplan, that allows all employees to choose their own level of health coverage, at prices that each employee can afford. These programs are popular, but take time and a knowledgable benefits broker to install and service. Try the NAHU Association to find a list of full-time benefits brokers in your area. |

You will experience it most places. Medical insurance costs keep escalating. |

Family coverage costs about $1200 per month. Individual coverage costs about $400 - $600 per month, depending on the individual's age.
Most of the time, employers pay half - or even more - of the insurance cost. Likely your employer is paying the same they paid last year, they just passed any premium increases along to you.
You can always start job hunting . . . but depending on how much the employer is picking up, you might already have a really good deal. |

An irresponsible government that doesn't enforce contract law or antitrust laws has allowed large insurers to jack up prices. Employers are passing on SOME of the increase. Only about 60% of employers offer insurance, so it's not a done deal you could do better elsewhere. EVERYONE is in the same boat so to go to your company and ask for a raise will NOT work--they're passing the same cost on to everyone.
We need to get the government to enforce laws and stop letting insurers rip us off. UHC is not the answer (good reason California had to reject that plan).
I suggest you look at:
QUALITY, ACCESSIBLE, AFFORDABLE health care for all.
That means preventative care (physical with follow up). Real medication (no Medicare "donut holes" the really ill are ripped off again.) No bogus ridiculously low "caps" on needed medical procedures. No abuse of the ER. No paying for the silly with the sniffles to go to the doc for free. No more bankruptcies over medical bills. I want THIS plan that ends abuse of the taxpayer, takes the burden off employers, provides price transparency, and ends the rip-off of the US taxpayer at the hands of greedy insurance CEOs (which has been repeatedly documented).

Read the PDF, not the blurb, for the bulk of the plan. Book is searchable on Amazon.com
Cassandra Nathan's Save America, Save the World
So far that's the only sensible plan I've seen--and in the book itself the other issues mentioned before are addressed.
Good luck. |
