Medicare Part A and B question?
This is a question for my mother. She will be entitled to Medicare part A and B this November. Supplements that we looked into are not good for her because she has cancer at age 57 and the supplements that Medicare offers do not pay enough for her medications, leaving her to pay out of her pocket some 4000 a month.. all of which she is unable to do. My question is.. can she still carry her personal insurance if she hold Medicare A and B. We live in NY. Her premium of 1300 a month is cheaper by far, than anything a supplement can offer her.
Additional Details
edit:
with the supplements, my mom has to pay out $4000 dollars a year first before they pay 95% of her medicines.. Her chemo pills are so expensive that even a 5% will run her into the ground each month. So we want to know if she can still keep her personal insurance, the one she used before she got the Medicare? That is far cheaper for her than the supplements can offer her.

Don't worry about being over insured..insurance company handle that problem through coordination of benefits.

Have you looked at mutual of omaha? They have great medicare supplement policies. Not sure of the cost though. usually pays 100% of medicare's coin/ded

Whether or not she can keep her current policy depends on the type of policy and company. If it is an individual plan most companies will cease coverage when she turns 65. Those that do allow her to stay on while Medicare eligible will nearly double the premium. I don't know if any in NY will allow her to stay; you'll need to contact the company.

If she is working and has a group policy she'll be able to stay with her current policy. If the group policy has 20 or more lives she can decline Part B and won't need Part D. The group policy will be primary. If the group policy is fewer than 20 lives it will be secondary to Medicare and she cannot decline Part B or Part D without incurring a penalty.

If she cannot keep her current policy you'll want to visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. There is a big difference between plans and what they will cover. The agent can find the best policy for her. There is no extra charge using an agent.

She might be able to get help with her Medications. She should talk with Social Security to find out if she qualifies for any of the programs they have available. She can also check this website to see if there is a program to help pay for her medication: http://www.needymeds.org/

I'm assuming that she is becoming Medicare Eligbile at age 57 due to disability from the cancer. Which is a whole different ball game than if she becomes eligbile at age 65. Assuming this is correct...STAY WITH WHAT YOU HAVE. The typical answers regarding a supplement to A, B and D are different for your mom. Someone who is SSI disabled and gets Medicare early does not get the same benefits as someone who is age 65. And that's not state laws, that's federal. I don't know what private insurance she has right now, though. Is it group coverage? If so, when she terminates with the company, she should get 36 months due to disability. In any case, keep the private insurance as long as possible (hopefully to age 65 or 66, whichever age is correct for your mother).

Depending on the size of the group, either the Medicare or her private insurance will be primary. Just make sure all the providers know that she has coverage both places.

I wish you and your mother all the best!

I'm not sure what NY's laws are but here in PA, if you carry a supplemental health care insurance (such as Security Blue, Advantra, UPMC, you have to take out both Medicare A&B in order to participate. Hope that helps.

Before age 65 your mom's personal policy is the primary payer, and medicare is secondary. At 65 years of age Medicare becomes primary, meaning medical bills go to Medicare first. Any balance still outstanding goes to your mom's personal policy.
If you check the Medicare book there are some supplemental plans that are free if you live in certain areas of NY.
Then you have to check out Medicare Part D That is the prescription coverage. Most personal policies stop covering prescriptions when you turn 65 and force you into purchasing Medicare part D. That costs less than $40.00 a month.
In your mother's case check with a local Senior Citizen Center and ask if they have a Staff member who could sit down with you and mom and figure out the best coverage for her.
