Mother going to assited living that I will pay for. Can I write it off?
It will be costing my wife and I around $20,000 a year. Is there any other options or ways to recoup some money from the government? The place she is in does not except medicaid.

We live in Charlotte, NC

Thanks!

Glad you asked that question, I was paying having to pay $2600 a month for my mothers nursing home care. It is around $4000 a month. So if you are getting quality care for $20,000 count your blessings!!!. I applied for my states equivalent of medicaid for her care. I was paying for her care, medications, incidentals, doctors co-pays and transportation to the doctor. Do not think that she gets lobster dinners or wears fur coats on the taxpayers money. I would challenge anyone to come up with an additional $40,000 a year to pay for their parents care. My mother is combative, does not know me, has very bad circulation, can barely walk, is incontinent and talks a lot of gibberish. Don't criticize me because I have the state paying for her care, it is almost impossible to do it on your own. And I did for 2 years!! 2 jobs, no vacations, no extras, no free time.

Well I have vented, I wish you all the luck in the world with your mom and you are a good son!!!

Personally I think she cheats to get so many 'best answers' because half the stuff I read is incorrect and arguments lack the ability to hold water. She gets a few right though, but way off here...

So, let me get this straight...she's offended because you want to take a tax deduction on $20,000 because her argument is that she'd rather you send her to a more expensive nursing home (instaed of Asst'd living which is normally not covered by Medicaid -- although there are exceptions) and have the government pay for all of it? Oh, ok I can see that (insert sarcastic tone here)

Sorry, I don't know the answer to the question other then to say that looking into whether you can count her as a dependent and use the 7.5% of AGI for a medical expense. That's where I'd look to get the answer.

At $20,000 per year if they're serving lobster I'm assuming the Asst. Living facility is in a very rural part of Maine?

Shouldn't you be able to claim her as a dependent and write off the elder care expense?

If your mother has no money, except for her social security, she can qualify for Medicaid to pay for her care, unless she had assets which were transfered to you, or anyone else, within a five-year period before Medicaid took effect.

As far as the tax write-off for your costs are concerned, call your tax advisor for the correct answer.

Note:

The US is sending OUR money all over the world to take care of poor people, to fight wars that shouldn't be, and to purchase oil from other countries, when we have it right here in our own back yards. $700 billion alone for oil, and who knows how much for everthing else.

What I don't understand is why someone would want to deny an American mother, who needs help, and can't care for herself, the quality of life that she deserves in her final days.

Twenty thousand dollars a year is a whole lot less than the multi-billions we're sending over there.

Charity begins at home. Your mother may need it one day. We can have faith and hope. But if we don't have charity, the other two don't matter.

If you are providing more than half of her support, then you can take her off your taxes as a dependent. In other words, you have to be paying more than what she receives in social security and savings interest. If that is true, you can take her as a dependent.

No, you can't write it off. It's a gift to her.

Recouping from the government, means, getting ME to pay for it. And as you can apparently afford it, and I can't, I find it very rude of you to ask ME, the taxpayer, to pay for something for you, that I might not be able to afford for myself.

The options are, pick a different place, one not so nice or so posh, and take the welfare (medicaid).

Yes, I'm offended. You're effectively asking for welfare, me, to buy her lobster dinners and a fur coat, because what most of the rest of the elderly population has, isn't "good enough". Now, I'm all about doing right by your mother. But at YOUR cost, not mine. I have MY mother to take care of . . .and I don't see you jumping in to throw money at HER.
