My 18 year old daughter is graduating with an Associates degree: will she lose insurance coverage?
Hello, My daughter is graduating from college next month. We were discussing her taking one month off to just kick back and relax as she's either been at school, working through breaks or interning since she graduated from high school. Then a light bulb went off--- our insurance policy has covered our older kids while they were full time students up to age 23, or until they are 19. So, does this mean, that since she's been industrious enough to obtain an Associates of Applied Science at the age of 18, she will no longer be covered on our health insurance policy?

Read your policy terms carefully. Chances are that if she's no longer a full-time student, the coverage will terminate at 18 or 19.

probabaly. She most likely has to be a full time student to be covered. I know that when i graduated college i was off my parents insurence the very next month . I graduated mid May and by June 1st i was off of it. The ins. companies waste NO TIME making sure those things are done.
I was only covered til age 18 if i had not gone to school. if you ins. states that your children are covered til 19, then she might be covered until 12:00am the date of her 19th birthday. But that is the VERY MOST you will get.

She is only 18 though, keep her in school. No matter what she's achieved so far, most kids go to school non-stop til they're 21 or 22. In my opinion her having insurance is more importnant than her having a break. thats what summer is for.

Pretty much. If she is not attending further education at any given time before the cut off age, she is considered a functioning, educated adult. Time for her to get a job with benefits. I would have loved to had a year to be a princess when I finished school but this is reality and our Government has us over a barrel to where we have to become slaves to our health care system or risk losing everything from one catastrophic illness.

I would call your insurance company....more than likely you can keep her covered while living in your home..some states, like Florida allows you to keep your children insured to a certain age..I think 21.

You just said it will cover her until she's 19. So I'm guessing, it will cover her until she's 19, even if she's not in school full time.

Call the company to make sure, but typiccally they will be considered a full time student until they receive a four year degree. She can take a year off, but your premium may increase. Now at 18 is a good time to take the time off since she is covered untill 19. So she should be able to take the time off with no complications
