Benefits coordinators initially said that my mother could have no beneficiaries for my Dad's pension that she was to receive; however, she died just weeks after he passed. It seems that there should be a way to obtain some (if not all) of the money he paid into retirement, especially considering that he was only two years away from retiring before he passed. |

No, only the surviving spouse is eligible. It's not like a "savings account" that can be passed down to your heirs. |

It depends on the rules of the pension program. Some of the older programs awarded %50 to a spouse and %25 to children. However in the last 20 years many of these pension programs have been rewritten to exclude the %25 Children rule. You will have to review the policy and possibly seek an attorny's advice regarding what actions you can pursue. |

That money your parents put into a pension was to take care of them when they retired. Now that they have passed away you have no rights to it at all.
Thats why you also take out life insurance, that your children can be entitled to! |

You may be eligible, but only if you're a minor. If you are over 18 years of age, you're out of luck. |

Technically, your mother did not survive your father since she didn't last for 30 days, which is the norm for most states. But, the fact that he didn't reach age of retirement, that may void the whole thing.
If you're the next-of-kin, you should be able to get it- but it'd be best for you to talk with an attorney about this! This can very from plan to plan, and is this state or federal government? |

My dad worked for the government also.And when I turned 18
I was exempt from being a deduction. I assume you were as
well. When my mom passed there was nothing for the children
to inherit from our dad. Luckily for mom she was at least able
to get by OK after dad passed. But she was his wife and so
she was entitled where we weren't. All payments ceased
when she passed a few years later. So I'd say, no, you are
not entitled to his pension. But you may want to check with
a Legal Aide attorney by phone and pose that question to
him, to be on the safe side. I would think every government
worker would be under the same arrangement tho. |

No, one of the huge downsides of a traditional pension is that there can only be one beneficiary with no contingents. Most people should at least consider taking the lump sum or purchasing life insurance with a small portion of their payments so they have more flexibility in planning. |
