Homer Baby | My Insurance claim? |
Early December 2006 I dropped my pc down the stairs.
I just got a call from the Insurance people and they say that I will get a letter from the underwriter before wednesday?
Why are they doing that and what does it mean?
I thought when you made a claim they just paid out on it, or tried to repair it for me? |
|

If you were contacting your insurance company to make a claim it would be unusual to for them to refer it back to the underwriters.
It could be that the underwriters of the policy are due to be contacting you to check the details of your policy to see if the information you provided at the outset is still correct. If this is not the case or you have not informed the underwriters of any changes of circumstance then your policy may be void and you will be unable to to claim against it for the damage. Worst case scenario is that they may possibly wish to cancel your policy.
As previously advised, may be worth waiting until wednesday to find out full details and then post another question, |

Sounds to me that they have been unsure as to the level of cover you require and have referred it to their underwriting department for clarification (their decision is always final). It could be that you don't have the Accidental Damage extention to cover that type of damamge. If you were adequately insured, ring them back and if they are quibling mention that you will be seeking advice from the Insurance Ombudsman. They will then treat your claim with the utmost of urgency..... |

Was your PC portable? Most uk insurance policies exclude accidental damage (i.e. dropping or spillages etc.) to portable electrical equipment.
Check your policy wording under contents section and the peril Accidental Damage. Under there you may find an exclusion stating something like computers or computer equipment designed to be portable is not covered.
Worth looking at before the letter arrives. |

I'm really not sure what the company's underwriters have to do with this - it's not really what they do.
I suspect you're more likely to be receiving a letter from the Claim Department, an appointed Loss Adjuster or an engineer appointed to inspect the damaged PC.
Wait until you receive the letter - don't worry right now - and come back here with more information when you receive it.
If you have difficulty with your claim, consider appointing an Assessor to act on your behalf. See http://www.ajcconsultants.ltd.uk for more details. |

the underwriters will ask what happened and then will decide what to do! they are the main people to deal with it and they will probable replace it if you have new for old cover |

I would suggest you ring your insurer back and ask them why it's taking so long to process your claim and what they actually mean? |

If the underwriter was nice, they would have called you. A letter will explain the process or what they've decided to do. Insurance companies will do the cheapest of the following;
repairing or replacing
The concept of insurance is to put you back into the same financial position you were in in the first place - no more, no less. |

It sounds as if the claim is in doubt. The best suggestion I have is to review the letter, and contact an attorney. |
