justme | My car got broken into and several items were taken. They're covered by homeowners ins. but I have no receipts |
The Gps was taken, my cell phone, an mp3 and a bunch of cds. Will I need receipts for all of these things to get reimbursed by my homeowner's policy? |

You won't need receipts - but the gps will likely NOT be covered, as it's primarily for use in cars. The rest of the electronics - cds, cell phone, are likely subject to a limitation of coverage. Most homeowners policies limit coverage for that kind of stuff to $250. |

No, your insurance company should take your word for what was stolen. They will ask you to make a list for them as to what you lost, they will assess a value to that, and send you a check for that minus your deductible (if you are with a good company, anyway). |

If you don't have receipts the insurance companies would take comps. Go to somebody like craigslist.com and look for all the items there and print 3 different prices for every item used then send it to the insurance company. Remember that here in America we don't get receipts with holiday presents...lol...Wink |

Future tip... if you dont have the receipts, but you need proof that you actually owned this stuff you should take pics of all your stuff... take pictures of your entire house and of what you own and store them in a safe place so you don't have to deal with this trouble later.... i suggest taking pictures and developing them and also keeping them in a cd-rom anywhere else but your house, so in case of an emergency (flood, hurricane, earthquake), you aren't likely to lose them. |

You may not need receipts for them, however be aware you will get Actual Cash Value for them, so if the cell phone is 2 years old, you won't get the price you paid for it, same for the GPS and for the MP3 player? and CDs. Also you probably have a $1K deductible or something like that correct? Your lost items may not exceed the deductible.
As for the GPS - if it was attached to the car, it would be part of your Comprehensive coverage, same for the MP3 player - if it was attached to the car.
Most people do not have receipts for items they purchased a while ago, so I would not worry about that. |

The above answer is good - but make sure you contact your agent as most policies are different. You may have a higher limit than $250 so don't get discouraged! |

You can get coverage for most of your stolen items, the GPS will be covered if it's not attached to your vehicle. Check your policy for coverage amounts and deductibles. Most homeowners policies are replacement cost but I have seen some that are actual cash value (replacement cost - depreciation).
I would recommend you determine a $$ figure for your loss, determine what your deductible is, do the math and figure out if it's worthwhile to contact your insurance company. When you report claims, they show up as property losses in CLUE (consolidated loss underwriting exchange) for 5 years. More than 1 loss in 5 years and you'll have difficulty changing companies or getting new property policies (say you want to move). Some companies will review for cancellation after 2 or more claims.
Just few things to consider. Sorry for your loss. |
