Car not taxed ? Insurance invalidate if not.
Be warned. |

I wold imagine police are always on the lookout for expired cars like that at the beginning of the year - just pay by check it won't clear for at least 2 days anyway and you'll stay out fo trouble |

If you drive the vehicle and get caught, yes. There is not and never has been a "grace period" after the expiration of a licence |

not if you keep it off the road , used to be you have a forthnight but now its all compuerised (have you seen the adverts?) and you now need to get your new tax before the old one runs out - ignorance is no excuse. |

You either have to pay it or declare it off road (SORN) Otherwise you will get the £80 penalty. You have to do it either way unfortunately. |

as long as the vehicle has not been reported on a public road until you re-tax it. |

The tax has to be renewed before the old one expires (or on the day) OR you have to declare the car "off the road" (SORN). The DVLA are now very hot on penalising those who do neither. You can pay over the internet. There is no grace period (and never has been) since the days when everyone had to queue at the council offices for renewal on the 1st January (the only available renewal date). Even then, the grace period was for the benefit of overworked council staff, not for the public. The offence of failing to display a valid tax disc remains. |

Its ok for you to drive around for 7 days with no tax! and as it being the new year 1st & 2nd then its understandable you cant renew your tax untill after that so...
If you did get stopped by the police, they will just give you a producer to show you have got the tax withen 7 days, if you dont do that then you will get in to trouble.
Dont worry, and happy new year. |

You dont get any leeway for taxing your car - you are reminded in plenty of time. If you are involved in an accident whilst you have no tax, your insurance will be nul and void and you will not be covered. If you drive your car, or even park,it on a road with no tax and the police/traffic wardens spot it you will get a fine. You may not get paid until then, but you've been aware for a full 12 months that your road tax is due. It's called forward planning! |

no you will be fine. you have a few days extra to get it over the holidays because the post office won't be open anyways!!! |

you get a few days grace period. you will be ok, but its false economy as you have to pay anyway.
if you get in an accident, tell the officer you were on your way to pay the tax... |

technically no you wont - but i reckon the worst ypou would get was a "producer" as it is only a few days
don;t push your luck too far though |

depends if u get caught or not. best thing to do it online as soon as u get yr money in bank as they can check computer then and see its been processed even if u dont have the disc. otherwise i think i would be in the queue when the post office opens to be sure. u used to get a grace period but i think they are clamping down now |

No, you get a grace period, but you should renew it sooner rather than later. |

Leave it in the garage. Your brother only will bother you if "blacklisted" for unpaid fines. |

You can do it over the Internet with a credit card, which is a lot easier than queuing up at the post office (if the Crawley post office is anything to go by.)
Will you get into serious bother? Probably not.
Could the DVLA hit you with a fixed penalty - yeah, if they felt like it. The laws about "you only need car tax if you use it on the road and don't need to renew if it's in a garage" changed a few years ago. Now you need to declare that it's off-road (SORN) or you will get hit :-(
How about posting off the renewal with a cheque dated a few days ago. Then you can honestly say it was posted before it ran out, and there's no way they'd get the cheque to a bank before you'd been paid. |
