Cindy C | My credit report comes back excellent but my insurance agent told me my credit was bad, how can that be? |

Your insurance agent can't tell you it's bad, only that it's not "good enough" for the company that checked it. They don't see the report, and usually only the company sees your "score".
You need to get a copy of your "score". Companies that have a minimum underwriting score, well, I've seen that "minimum" range from 525 to 701.
When you say your report is "excellent", you're probably meaning that you don't have any late payments, right? The score not only tallies payments, but the number of consumer based inquiries in the past year (ie, how many times you've applied for credit - including in-store, no interest offers), the number of accounts you have open, the average balance on those accounts, the available amount you have to charge up, etc.
If you take advantage of all those no-interest in-store offers, say, 4x a year, have 10 store credit cards with a $2500 available balance each, pay them off every month; have a mortgage and a car payment, and shop your mastercard out every year for the lowest rate, you're going to have a HORRIBLE credit score.
To fix it, close all the store credit card accounts you don't use, and close the visa/mastercard accounts that are the newest. Don't let ANYONE do a credit check on you, not even for that extra 10% off for applying for a HOme Depot card today!!! It will take six whole months to fix. Sorry. |

I actually am not sure why your insurance agent is checking your credit. It may be standard, but I've never known them to pull credit. If your score is above 700, you are in really good shape with regards to your credit. If you don't know your score, you might consider going to www.myfico.com. I use it regularly to monitor our credit scores and make sure nothing weird is going on. You should check to make sure no one has opened an account using your SSN and damaged your credit.
At MyFico.com you can get your credit scores as well as look at your credit history and all your accounts, balances and monthly payments. If you want all three credit bureau scores, it will cost you about $40. If you just want one, I think you can get it for $10-15 or so. It has been a great resource for us.
I would also check with your insurance agent and find out why he needs your credit report anyway. Like I said, it may be SOP, but I don't know that my agent has ever checked my credit. |

There are three companies that provide credit information. Show the insurance agent your report and tell him there has to be a mistake (it happens). Ask him which company he got the bad credit information from. |

One of you is dealing with incorrect information. Ask the agent for specific details. If there are inaccuracies on your report you should work with ALL 3 bureaus (Transunion, Equifax, and Beacon) to clear them up. If you don't get all three corrected, the ones you did correct will pick up the old information from the others and you'll have to start all over again. |

Insurance companies don't just use your credit score - they may use other variables that are correlated with high claims and adjust your premiums accordingly. In some cases, a variable may be a positive for your credit score but a negative for your insurance score. |
