Most hospitals have programs to help out people who can't pay. He needs to call the hospital business office and see what's available.

However, medical bills are the one number reason people file bankruptcy.

He needs to call the state to see if they can help.

Then, failing that, contact the hospital and see if they can cut the bill down and set up INTEREST FREE payments.

Else, he is probably looking at bankruptcy.

I'm so sorry and hope he is going to be ok.

Wow I'm so sorry---I would start by calling the hospital at the number on the bills and explain that he has no insurance and see if they have a lower rate in that case..and see if they can work out a payment plan. Usually the charge is so much lower for patients w/o insurance.

I'm very sorry to hear about your desparate situation. Go apply for disability insurance (at social security office), apply for Welfare and Food Stamps (at wellfare office), and negotiate with doctor's and hospitals to reduce the billing amounts, to wait for the payment until your father can start working, and to arrange for installment payments. I hope your father finds a job where the employer carries group medical insurance for the employees with minimal employee contribution to protect him and his family of any future illnesses.

Hopefully, with Pres. Obama, all Americans will have some kind of medical insurance so that the situation like your family will not happen in the near future.

Call the hospital as soon as possible and ask about what financial assistance he might qualify for. They will likely require documentation of household income, and then apply a discount (if you are eligible) based on your household income.

(For example, here in Ohio, patients with household income at 200% of the federal poverty level or below are eligible for a discount. The closer your household income is to the federal poverty level or below, the bigger the discount is. Its called the HCAP program in Ohio, but most states have similar programs. http://www.ohanet.org/finance/HCAP.html )

DO NOT just ignore the bill. If your father ignores the bill and doesn't call to request a financial assistance program, he will continue to be liable for the full amount of the bill. Eventually, he'll get taken to court for it. You have to call about the bill in order to get any of the special assistance he might be eligible. The WORST thing to do in this situation is to just ignore the bill and not ask for help from the hospital.

First off, "We" don't owe this bill, "He" owes it.I am assuming your father is elderly and you are over 18. This makes a difference. I take care of my mother even though she is fairly independant, and her bills are always kept seperate from mine. You need to ask for financial help upon entering the hospital for him, many will cover the expenses but only from the point of asking forward, and be very careful of what you sign. NEVER sign anything pertaining to financial responsibility. This is not being selfish, it is protecting your income to help support your father's needs after the health crisis has passed. Contact the hospital and tell them your situation and see if there is anything they can do to help you with this bill. Once a person is over 18 they are responsible for their own bills and medical expences. No hospital may ever refuse care due to a inability to pay. You need to find a way to get a personal income at this point and evaluate your living situations. This is a red flag that tells you your present situation is not working. Income must be higher in your house. Good Luck
