My doctor said that he wouldn't be suprised if I was denied for the Gastric Bypass surgery, because?
Hi, how are you? I'm not doing very well. My doctor said that he wouldn't be suprised if I was denied for the Gastric Bypass surgery, because I ddin't go see him for 4 months in a row (for the Doctor-Supervised Diet). But I did complete 4 months, just not in a row. What do you think?

I have Medicaid....I'm in ERIE, PA!!!!!

So? Start over and this time do it like you WANT the surgery. What else have you got to do for the next 4 months? Weight loss surgery is only as successful as the patient is devoted to the process!

I had to prove I failed other weight loss efforts, take 6 months of nutrition classes, see my doc 4 times in that 6 months, and have a battery of tests before I was approved to even see the bariatric surgeon!

Nope-if you can't follow the guidelines for approval, they don't consider you a good candidate for the surgery, 'cause you won't follow the guidlines to keep the weight off or maintain it.

you might be denied because the doctors want to supervise you on how you deal with diet, exercise, and the emotional and mental stress of this whole thing. they just want to make sure that you are able to handle it on your own after surgery because a proper and consistent diet w/exercise is crucial to your health. Get back on the right track and you should be fine.

The guidelines are there for a reason. You have to go in a row, not whenever you feel like it. Each insurance companies have their own criteria, and if you don't follow it, most likely you will be denied. I had Medicare and the hoops you have to jump through are for YOUR benefit not the insurance company's. The visit you had to go to were probably about 15 minutes of your time, they just weigh you and take your blood pressure and if you wanted the surgery that bad, you would have gone. I am sorry but some people think they are entitled just because they are overweight, it is just a tool, the rest is up to you. You have to make a lifestyle change and use your tool to your advantage, no one else can do that for you. I did have my surgery but the hoops were well worth it, so I am more confident that I know I can do it. Down 60 pounds in six months and healthier and happier. Good Luck, just go to the doctors weigh ins.

Um, they weren't in a row . . . likely, you'll be denied.

You will be denied because there are far less expensive ways to lose weight, other than gastric bypass or similar. Before any insurer, including Medicaid, will pay for such a procedure, they will insist that you have tried appropriate conventional means to lose weight.

Four months isn't going to do the trick for you. They will insist on at least twelve months of properly supervised dieting before they will consider you a candidate for gastric bypass.

As well, you SHOULD try conventional means of weight loss. Gastric bypass is not the 'cure all' many seem to think. You will NOT be pleased with the restrictions they place on the types of foods you are allowed to eat, and won't be happy either with the regular diarrhea which accompanies gastric bypass.
