The building SHOULD be insured on the amount it would take to rebuild and not what has been paid for it, and you do this by knowing the floor area and multiply that by a rebuilding rate, which, for example could be $150 per square foot.
He will also need to think about insuring the loss of rental income in the event of insured property damage - which can usually be passed back to the tenant.
Other covers that he should consider are for personal injuries to the public and workers comp.

1.8 mil?? how many square feet? thats pretty cheap for a shopping center if you ask me... 1.8 mil is a good price if its in a well populated area.. the profit he could make renting stores would be crazy.. and insurance for anything is always good |

You can easily get a fire only policy by finding a commercial insurance agent. Or try a commercial company like St. Paul Travelers.
But if your friend is going to own a shopping center, he is going to need liability insurance a lot more than fire insurance. He'll get sued many times by people in the center or that have lease disputes, etc.
He really, really, really needs a lot of good liability because without it he could not only lose the shopping center to a lawsuit (and still pay the mortgage if he owes money on it), but they'll also go after him personally....meaning he could lose his house, cars, bank accounts, etc.....if he doesn't have enough liability to cover a claim made against him for stuff like negligence. |

yeah and his lawyers will sort all that out for him when they do the purchase contracts all he has to do is ask them to find an insurance contract that will give him what he wants...but then again if he has 1.8 mil. to spend he wont be taking advice from yahoo answers |

Well, he'll need to contact a local, independent agent, and furnish information about the location such as square footage and type of each tenant, etc., in order to get a quote.
This type of insurance is NOT hard to get! |
