My grandmother took out life insurance on her daughter, my mother. How do I find out if this is true?
I was told that if I go to a funeral home they can find out for me. Is this true? Additional Details My Grandmother died in the '60s. I am asking this question because my mother asked me to do some research on it. It's completely innocent. I am amused by the accusations though. Thanks.
Nope, it's not true. Funeral homes can't find this out for you. If there's no record of the policy in her valuable papers, and she didn't make payments to an insurance company in the past 15 years or so, the policy probably lapsed.
Gerber type whole life for kids is widely sold when children are born - and the policies usually lapse in a few years for nonpayment of premium. When the kids turn 18, the parents can either convert it to a different whole life policy, or let it lapse. The vast majority let it lapse.
Which is my way of saying, she might have bought one 40 years ago, but it's probably been cancelled for 20+ years.

but is it any of your business?
She would tell you--if she wanted you informed?
That info should remain confidential and private.

Depends on whether or not your grandmother is alive. If she is then she has a confidential relationship with the Insurer. If your grandmother is not alive then you need to see a lawyer or the administrator of your mothers estate and they will be able to get details.
Hope this helps

Ask her. If she is dead, the funeral home won't know...
terry
Funeral homes would not know unless shewas registered with one for death expenses.Sometimes thera are things called prepaid funerals. What do you need to know for?
Rani
I don't know--- but I am wondering why it matters to you? Do you think maybe she plans to murder your mother for the insurance?
I have insurance on my kids--not because I want a bunch of money if one of them dies--but because it may take more money than I have to bring their bodies home from someplace far away, or to take care of their funerals/cremation/ or pay their final medical bills.
If there is money left after those things are taken care of, then it would go to any spouse of child they may have at the time...or maybe my own funeral, as I cannot imagine living without any one of them.
