My house & contents insurance has lapsed after direct debit was cancelled in error.?
I was away from home ill at the time & now I have to start again with a new policy. Should I stick with same company I have been with for over 20yrs & have never claimed from or should I take this opportunity to go with new equally reputable company who are offering a slightly better deal that will reduce my outgoings.

Although I am unaware of any current problems with my property I am disabled & cannot get into my loft to thoroughly check all the stored items or the roof etc. It would take forever to check it all & I need to get covered asap really. What happens if an undetected problem comes to light like a missing roof tile that has caused hidden damage over a long period. Would the new company cover it as newly discovered or if its obviously old previously undetectable damage would the old company still be liable?

Should I stick to the old company & just start a new policy with them to be on safe side? I can never understand insurance its a minefield. Help!

you should definitely contact your old company and explain what happened, because already you have been flagged industry wide as not paying your premium. It makes it harder to get insurance when you do this.

Your duty of care & maintenance to the house is a condition that runs throughout the duration of the contract - it does not just arise at renewal or when a new policy is taken out.

The answer is basically that your existing company are just as likely as the new company to refuse a claim due to neglect.

Take youre insurance out with whomever you are most happy with- (on price AND cover provided). But get someone to check that there are no maintenance issue with the house.

I would call your old company for the policy that expired and explain to them what happened. If that can not be resolved, then strat checking around at other policies.

I wouldn't normally recommend switching insurers for small differences in premium unless you're unhappy with their cover or service.

If the non-payment was a genuine oversight, they might even reinstate cover for you if you explain the situation and point out you've been a loyal customer for 20 years. If not, get them to requote on a like-for-like basis and pay over the phone by debit or credit card for immediate cover.

I agree with Daniel. The renewal of an insurance policy is exactly the same as the taking out of a new policy so either insurance company (should be) equally likely to refuse to pay a claim due to non-disclosure.

If you are concerned I would recommend that you contact a local broker who may be able to help you with arranging the policy and, should you have to make a claim, help you in negotiation with the insurance company. Just remember that if you arrange the policy yourself you are 'on your own' and at the 'mercy' of the insurer.

Don't worry go with a new company if it will save you money, i change my policies every year to get the best deal as do lots of other people. You don't have to go about checking your housefor problems it's just that you have to be unaware of any problems. If anything does happen to your house then you will be covered by your new policy.

Hie..I think its anytime better to go for a new company where you can save your money.!
If you are intrested in more low premiums than what you were paying till now you can send me a mail at ag_sneha@gmail.com with the premium u have been paying till date!
I will offer you more low cost premium for free cost! Then its your decision which one to go for!But have your options open!

If it's been more than 30 days, it's likely your current carrier won't even take you back, and it could be difficult to find a new one.

I'd shop the insurance out based on coverage, service, and price, and not think too much about "loyalty" to a company. I promise you, they have NO loyalty to you.

If there's an "undetected problem", it's likely not going to be covered, with EITHER company. The old company will likely not cover it, as it's not DISCOVERED during the active policy period. So I think it's likely if you have an "old claim" or a "maintenance claim", it's not covered either way.

So shop out based on what's RIGHT NOW - coverages, service and premiums.
