I don't live in Idaho, so I don't know if your state has it or if it works differently than in my state, but there is a program here called "Hospital Care Assurance Program or Charity Allowances."
You go in with all your tax/financial information. They give you a rating number, which determines how much they expect you're capable of paying. If you're in the lower-income bracket (which here is under $20K/yr for a single person with no kids -- I think), then the hospital may cover the entire bill or at least part of it. It's funded by the county, state, and federal money.
Even though this is in collections, I would suggest contacting the hospital's financial department and find out if they have any sort of program like that. It couldn't hurt.
The Hospital Care Assurances program is also known nationally as the Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital Payment Program.
And I see a lot of suggestions to just file for bankruptcy -- well, that may be an option but seriously, find a lawyer or an accountant or someone to advise you before you do that. Bankruptcy isn't an easy way out. |

Why should I have to pay for your husbands medical bills. I got my own problems, So don't even mention socialized medicine. But there are places you can go to to get help. Ask the hospital they have lists of things like this. |

Once it's gone to judgemetn, it's probably too late.
You probably could have repriced it to a cash price, before collections, by talking to the hospital.
Talk to your pastor, see if your church has a fund or can somehow help you out with this, or has any other ideas. |
