My husband is an AC technician. What kind of insurance does he need for...?
his tools and health/accident. His employer does not cover his tools, health insurance and does not have worker's comp. Reside in: TX
Additional Details
He is NOT a subcontractor, but an EMPLOYEE of the company AND on the books. The company does provide him w/a vehicle (he does not need a commercial auto policy). He does not need a GL policy as its not his company. I just need a policy that would cover his tools that are inside the company issued truck as the employer clearly stated they do NOT cover stolen tools. Also a policy that would cover if he's hurt while on the job (accident/health). I understand that the employer is "on the hook" if he were to get on hurt on the job, but what if he's temporarily out of work for a serious injury that occurred on the job-will the employer still be "on the hook" for lost wages?

Who Am I
He should at least have insurance that covers electrocution- death and health

There are a couple of things I can address in your question above. First with regards to your husbands tools. If you have homeowners insurance there is typically a provision in your homeowners policy that provides coverage for property used primarily for business purposes subject to a limit of $2,500 while on premises(meaning your home location) and $500 off premises. If the limits mentioned are too low you can contact your homeowners agent to request an endorsement increasing these limits if the insurance carrrier permits or have it added as a scheduled property floater on your policy if available. Alternatively, your husband can purchase a small contractors tools policy to cover his tools that his employer will not.

With regard to the policy covering your husband if he is injured on the job. In Texas employers have two choices to purchase work comp insurance. The employer can purchase a regular work comp policy or the employer can register as a non subscriber and obtain similar coverage that is a substitute for regular work comp coverage. If your husband is injured at work he would make a claim against his employers work comp policy or non subscriber policy. Furthermore if you are concerned about your husband being out of work for a duration of time due to an accident/sickness that may or may not be job related you should research disability insurance. First have your husband contact his Human Resources department with his employer to see what, if any, current disability insurance coverage or options he has available to him as an employee. If you find that the coverage is not available or inadequate you can look to secure an individual disability insurance policy to protect against loss of income if you become sick or injured and cannot work. Your husband will need to answer medical questions and provide income information to secure an individual policy.

Well, his employer is "on the hook" for workers comp benefits, anyway, unless he's REALLY a subcontractor.

He needs workers comp (for work related injuries), health insurance (like you, for non work related injuries and sickness), general liability, inland marine (for the tools), and possibly commercial auto for the vehicle he drives.

The tools are no problem. If you have homeowners insurance you can usually get an endorsement to your policy that covers tools used in business (remember, anything used for business purposes is generally not covered under your homeowners policy).

If you have renters insurance you can usually get the same kind of endorsement to your policy. limits are usually low, but overall the cost is inexpensive as well.

If you don't have renters insurance and you rent, you should. A good policy usually costs $100 - $200 a year and should be more than sufficient for your needs.

As for workers comp, Texas is an odd state. In most states if you are an employer with 3 or more employees you are required by law to have work comp insurance. This covers medical bills and lost wages for your employees if they are injured on the job.

Texas, however, is one of the rare exceptions. In Texas some employers are allowed to "opt out" of the work comp system and do not have to provide it to their employees. HOWEVER, if you elect to "opt out" of providing this coverage your employees can sue you directly for the injuries they receive, so very few companies do this.

With regard to your last question, health insurance can be obtained for individuals just about anywhere. It covers injuries or illnesses you sustain anywhere for any reason. It's a good idea to have but can get expensive. If you're young and healthy consider going with a high deductible (the part you pay up front) as this will keep your premiums down. Also, if you aren't planning to have a family see if you can opt out of pregnancy coverage. It's a bit of a risk to do so, but if you're reasonably certain you won't need it try going without it because it can be very expensive.

Disability coverage is also a good idea as it replaces the income you'll lose if your husband is injured and unable to work. Someone who works with his hands is far more likely to suffer an injury that disables him than someone who sits behind a desk.

Hope this helps
