phil t | My insurance coverage (through father) ends in 2 weeks. I need insurance and have an existing condition.? |
I think it is going to be hard and expensive to get covered for health insurance with an pre-existing condition. I looked into Cobra and found that they do not need to cover people with existing conditions. I live in MN. |

If you got COBRA coverage through your Dad's plan, by law they are required to offer you coverage for preexisting illnesses. I believe they are required to extend your coverage up to 36 months. The premium will be pricey - 102% of what your Dad pays. The Blues used to have annual open enrollment periods when anyone could enroll in their plans - sadly, this is no longer necessarily the case. On an open enrollment plan there would be an exclusion period for preexisting illnesses, which might last a couple of years (but in the meantime, at least you'd have coverage for everything else).
Good luck! |

Cobra's can cover you for a period of time. I think it may be up to 2 years? Unfortunately Cobra's are extremely expensive. For example, when I worked for a company I was getting health insurance for $100 a month. When I got laid off, for me to get Cobra it would have cost me $450 a month.
Pre-existing conditions are hard. Health insurance companies can reject you for anything. I would suggest calling the major companies and go ahead and put your application in at several of them. Don't lie to them about your condition, they will find out. If you can, find a job at a place that offers health insurance to their employees. A lot of the big retail places offer insurance now, even if you're only part-time. I know Pet Smart Wal-mart, and Home Depot do. Sometimes you have to work there for a few months before you can get it, but it's something to look into. |

If you are old enough (I assume since coverage is ending) you could get a job with health insurance benefits. In fact, having a preexisting condition makes quality health insurance a very important benefit of a good job. |

If you continue the coverage through COBRA, they will, indeed cover your preexisting conditions. THe average COBRA plan runs $350 a month.
Yes, it's hard and expensive, depending on what state you are in and what the preexisting condition is, it can be impossible. The BEST thing to do, is find a job with health insurance access, even if it's bringing in shopping carts at your local Walmart. |

If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the American College Student Association (ACSA), a national organization for college students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable. |
