You can find some great information at www.minkandassociates.com

A good agent can save you a lot of time but you still need to be informed on what you want your plan to do. To compare policies, here is a list of questions that can help:

1. Do you have an out of pocket max, both in network and out of network? Check what that is for each policy.

2. Be leery of scheduled plan that limits room & board rates and other procedures.

3. Do doctor visits include wellness benefits such as physicals, ob-gyn exams, mammograms etc. Is the number of visits limited to a certain a number per year?

4. What does the plan do in regards to outpatient testing and therapy ( MRIs, CAT scans, EKGs, Stress tests, etc) Are these subject to deductible or under a co-pay? Be aware of any limits that might accompany this aspect of your plan (i.e. $1,000 per day).

5. What does the plan do in regards to outpatient chemo and radiation?

6. How is outpatient surgery handled?

Have your agent explain each of these to you.

Best of luck.

Speak with an agent! It does not cost anything and often times, they can help you narrow down your options based on what you need from your health insurance plan.

You need a trusted adviser to help you through the process of purchasing health insurance so that you understand what you are purchasing. Some may suggest going on line to get a quote but you probably already know that there is much more to health insurance than price. Some might even suggest a discount plan which is not insurance at all.

Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health status. They can answer questions as to what is and is not covered by the policy, explain deductibles and copays and show you the hospitals and doctors that participate in the network.

Ultimately, you are the one who determines the affordability of your health insurance plan by deciding how much you will participate in sharing the cost of your health care with your insurance company.

If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage as well as low deductibles, low copays and optional vision and dental benefits your monthly premiums will be significant.

On the other hand if you are young, healthy and use the health care system rarely you could consider a plan that covers only the major health catastrophe which will result in a relatively low monthly premium. You then can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit and still come out ahead.

Use the Internet to educate yourself but use an agent to purchase the coverage.

Use a broker to help you. There job is to help you become underwhelmed. Why go about it yourself when you can have a professional for free?

Start by comparing plans on my site. It requires no personal information to use.

Insurance costs roughly $400 per person per month in NY state no matter which carrier you choose. Your location may offer different carriers and prices, but be sure to choose a carrier that has a good reputation. Ask others who they use and like. You may also be able to continue your existing coverage through COBRA if it is available in your state. Look into it.
