My mother was murdered a week ago, what financial resources are available to me?
My mom was murdered by her boyfriend of 7 years in a murder suicide four days before Christmas. I am a 21 year old college student going to Ohio University. I was wondering what financial resources are available to me? She didn't have much money but she always provided for me, now i don't have her I don't know what to do. We are already planning on collecting 10,000 dollars worth of insurance and funds from the victims of crime fund. We are also looking into suing her murderer's estate. When I say we I am referring to me and my two sisters. I was just wondering if there is anything else that anyone would know of in regards to helping to establish my financial security.

If she had a job call the company she worked for an inquire about life insurance there. Also look through her bank statements etc.. and look for insurance there.

Sorry for your loss and hopefully she had some insurance.

That's what life insurance is for. If a parent didn't have any life insurance (or not enough life insurance) to help support their kids after the parent dies, then there isn't really any other resource.

The only other thing is that minor children may be eligible to collect survivors benefits from Social Security. (Depends on whether your mom had worked enough to be eligible for those benefits, etc.) If either of your siblings are minors, they should check with the social security office to see if they will be eligible for survivor's benefits. You would not be eligible, because of your age.

Sorry for your loss. (Also, keep this in mind when you have children, and always make sure you carry enough life insurance to continue providing for them if you pass away unexpectedly!)

P.S. I live in Ohio, and I think I remember reading about your mom in the paper. What a sad story.

Well, none. You're an adult. Sorry for your loss, but now you're on your own.

I am sorry for your terrible loss. I am in CA and something simular just happened here before Christmas.

You can try the Social Security Office if your mom has any minor children. But since you are an adult, there is probly nothing available for you.

Go to your financial aid office at your school and see if they can help. Now that your situation has changed you might be able to reapply for financial aid with your new circumstances. You might also talk to the local news stations and see if someone or company will set up a trust fund for you. They often do that. Call the news stations and ask.

Good Luck to you. You can go far and it will make you stronger if you go and finish your goals.

Am so sorry about your tragic loss, first of all. Like someone else mentioned, you may want to check into possible Social Security benefits for you and your sisters. If your mom participated in a pension plan or a 401K plan, you might be able to obtain proceeds from that. Good luck with your wronglul death action against her murderer's estate.

Best of luck to you and your sisters!

You have the insurance money, that's probably it. Sorry I don't know what else to tell you.

At least you have enough for burial. Sorry about your mom, I cannot imagine having to go through that. What a horrible thing . Yes I would see a lawyer about suing his estate. Best of luck. As for your financial security it's up in the air like everyone elses.

I don't know the age and circumstances of your sisters but you can try to get your mother's social security benefits since you are in college. Go to your local social security office with her death certificate and your birth certificate and ask them there.
