Are you my lobster? | My own insurance? |
In High school I was on my parents insurance and then I moved out with my boyfriend and got put on his parents insurance, but Im pretty sure his mom is lying to us about how much the insurance costs. We payed a varied amount (75-200) every 2 weeks for a couple months and then that same varied about after that per month. I feel bad about not trusting her but I want to have my own insurance. Mainly because I want to be self sufficient and pay my own everything!
How do I go about getting insurance for me and my boyfriend? Additional Details Wow, Ive gotten some odd comments. Im 23 and my bf is 25. We have our own everything and Im not spoiled at all, both of our parents are not well of so we have had to do everthing on our own. Im sorry If I gave off the wrong impression. My concern is really not how much she charges its how. She will not charge biweekly one month and then charge us biweekly the next for the same amount as the monthly. Also, I just want to be completly selfsufficient. Maybe you should just answer the question or dont at all next time and not worry about someones personal life. Thanks. |

Call to different insurance agencies, and they will give you a free quote. You need to have all your car information, your driving information (any tickets) and your boyfriends. Call around to different places, quotes vary from company to company. Insurance rates never "vary" either. They have a set policy premium that you can choose to pay every month (depending on the insurance co) or every six monthes. My boyfriend and I go through AIG insurance and we have 2 vehicles and pay $180 per month. The amount never changes. Your boyfriends mother will also need to call her insurance company and have the vehicle dropped from her insurance plan. |

My hats off to you for being independent and wanting to take care of your own debts, don't see this much anymore. I felt the same way when was young and it made me a stronger person, as you will be as well. Yes, you guys can certainly have your own insurance in your own names and pay your own premium. Just call around or go see some local auto insurance companies in your area and get several quotes. If you have Farm Bureau Insurance in your area, I have found they have the best rates compared to State Farm or Allstate. Best wishes to you and your boyfriend. |

Individual health insurance plans do not allow for non family members to be covered. So it sounds like your concerns are correct. You can't be on his mom's policy and in fact unless he is in college he can't even be on the policy. Did you fill out an application? Did she give you insurance cards? Unless you gave the insurance company your social security number you are not covered. You can also call the insurance company and ask them if you are covered. Health insurance for someone your age can be very inexpensive depending on the coverage you choose. Find a local insurance broker that represents more than one company they can help you find a plan that fits both your needs and budget. I usually recommend a high deductible for young people, this keeps the premium low while give you coverage against catastrophic medical bills. |

Call any insurance company.. Geico, Allstate, State Farm... etc. and get quotes :) not hard :)
My husband (23) and myself (19) pay $160/month for 5 months for a 6 month policy. In May it's going down to $132/month for 5 months for a 6 month policy & we have a 2007 VW GTi :) |

SURPRISE! Insurance COSTS A LOT OF MONEY for people in your age group!
Why don't you just go TALK to their agent, for starters and see what it would cost you both for a sep. policy. I bet you'll drop your jaw.
or just check out http://www.progressive.com for a quote.

Are either of you employed? Are you students? Both jobs and schools usually offer insurance, even if you're not full time you may be able to get it. If you're not in school and your boyfriends parents are paying COBRA that is very expensive. Have you looked into seeing if your state offers some sort of insurance. I'm in NY and I know our state does but I know nothing about it. If you call a clinic or your doctor they may know of some program. If you call an insurance agent they are going to try to sell you more than you probably need (that's how they make money), but you will get insurance. Do you belong to any associations or unions? They may have insurance as well. Where ever you get it from it's going to cost you.
If it's car insurance the best thing you can do is call many different companies and get the least amount you need. If your under 25 it's going to be very expensive. |

As you have noticed with the answers you received here, it's not always easy to find the answers you may be looking for.
To be able to help you, I'd first like to know whether or not you work? Or your boyfriend? I'm sure you do, but is it a place where you are able to get Health insurance? How much are you able to pay each month? Are you relatively healthy?
I personally have decided to go a different route rather than traditional insurance, simply because I am self-employed, and a single mom of 3. I just couldn't see throwing away $650 a month for insurance when I rarely go to the doctor at all, and that is money I would rather put into a HSA or health savings account, or even a traditional savings account, and be able to have that money available to me in the future when needed. Shoot, even after just a few years of doing so, I would have more than $20k saved up, rather than in the pocket of some insurance company never to be seen or heard of again.
Contact me if you have any questions or would like to know what I do and see if it may help you as well.
Good Luck! (and don't mind some of the comments here...) |

You don't talk about what kind of insurance you're talking about, I'm assuming it's either car insurance or renters insurance.
In either case, the name on the title, registration, and insurance policy should all match, or there's going to be a problem come claim time.
Go call a local, independent agent near you (find one in the yellow pages or at www.iiaa.org) and go sit down with them, and they can get you multiple quotes, and explain all the coverages to you. Don't buy over the internet - they aren't going to educate you about what you're buying as well as someone in front of you can. |

auto or health?
as far as i know, you cann't have an unrelated person on a family health policy..
oh, what country are in in? |

For Health - either get a job with benefits or see an agent of one of the main carriers. If you are in the U.S., check out Cigna, Coventry, Great West or BCBS, or one of the short-term insurance guys like Assurant.
For auto - go to progressive.com, they will compare your quote against all other carriers and you can pick one. |

Call insurance companies and get quotes. Duh.
I have an 18 year old son and his insurance is $140 a month - that's for ONE young driver. I seriously doubt she is cheating you guys.
Your insurance is going to be higher getting your own policy. She's nicer than me - I wouldn't HAVE you guys on my policy. If either of you got in a serious accident and someone died, she could be ruined.
Not only that, but if you are old enough to be shacking up, you are old enough to be paying your own bills... and having your own place.
You sound like a spoiled brat trying to be a grown up. |

Insurance is most expensive when you are age 25 and under. You can research prices on your own on the insurance companies' websites.
You should be grateful that your boyfriend's mother is nice enough to let you stay on her insurance in the first place.
nite_ang made a good point also. |
