My son had his hospital bill delcared charity? what about Dr Bills?
I sent copies of the Declarations to the individual Dr. involved in his surgery and they said they don't honor it but my son has no way to pay and no income or insurance?

Well, they don't HAVE to honor someone else's write off of bad debt. That's like saying, oh, Visa wrote off my bad debt, then expecting Mastercard to do it, only because Visa did.

Well, if he has no income, and no insurance, and no assets, I wouldn't worry about it. They can take him through court, and get a judgement against him for the debt, but he's what's called "judgement proof", ie, there's no way to collect unless his circumstances change.

Can't get blood from a stone. But they sure will haunt you FOREVER with the debt collection attempts.

Hospitals are able to sign off on patient accounts and still get some payment from the goverment. Doctors have a choice to give a discount or still charge the same for their services. Doctors do not have to discharge the bill because the hospital has discharged their bill. Your son is still legally binded to each doctor and his bill.

queenofyack
Yep many doctors bill seperatly for there services. Sucks cause once you think you have things cleared up here comes another bill.
Maybe try applying for Medicaide fore your son. If approved they will go back like 3 months (sometimes more) and pay the bills off for you.

i've had quite a few med bills. no, the dr's won't automatically honor that, but it may help them consider it. take copies of the bill down to the dr offices personally. speak with the business manager. state your reasons for not being able to pay. (son has disease X with no hope of getting a job or injury Y and won't be able to work for a year, etc). you may still be able to get them to declare it as a loss or charity or whatever. your son may be able to apply for medicaid as an emergency case even if he was working at the time of tjhe accident/injury/illness. he may be required to pay a "spenddown" or co-pay with medicaid paying part of it. the most the medicaid people can say is no! finally, most creditors will not seriously hold a medical bill against you. they realise that you didn't ask for this expense and what a huge expense it is! not like going out and getting a car or house you can;t afford. send them $5 a month until the end of time. i hope your son is ok and will continue to improve!
