My travel insurance co refused to pay my claim, because they said they did not believe the amount I claimed ?
had been stolen. They accused me of fraud, by saing the amount was higher than it really was, and refused my claim. I had a police report. Is this common for them to do this and is it worth telling Watchdog or something?

Get hold of watchdog.

This is not uncommon, insurance companies will try anything to prevent having to pay out and this is just one tactic. Basically they are hoping you will go away, just fight back and tell them you won't let it drop.

Barry auh2o
Quite common. They are saying " prove it" and a police report isn't proof.

All the police do is put down what you tell them.

With insurance, its all about paperwork.

I lost my engagement ring in my home.
It was my husband's mothers, and I never had it assessed.
When I tried to make a claim, they refused it on the grounds of a lack of paperwork.

The ring had been assessed years back, but they claimed it was out of date, and not proof..even though I had photos where the ring was visible on my hand. Ah well...good luck.

Get as much documentary evidence as possible - include all receipts, bank statements, credit card statements and all notes and any papers written out and made out to you over the situation. If you can prove and give them every reason that they are wrong and if they still refuse you and accuse you of making a fraudulent claim you can make appeals on behalf of consumer's rights. Because you still have your statutory rights.

oliprofessor
if you're not lying, then you can easily prove them wrong; go print off your bank statements showing the cash withdrawals for the money you've claimed to lose.

Further to oliprof's answer. If you have the proof (a police report is not sufficient on it's own) and have sent copies to the insurers contact the Insurance Ombudsman. Final resort is to go to the Small Claims Court.

Well was it? And, what proof do you have?

And, more importantly what has your insurance broker told you? I had a girl trying to make a claim on her policy -- it was accidental death and although her boat sank in Antarctica I tried to explain to her that she didn't die. She filed the claim anyway, but at least she got my opinion first that she wasn't entitled to anything.

luludoodie
Everyone thinks they can make some extra money when on holiday by claiming for things they didn't have.

The insurance companies have lie detectors on their phones and the operators are trained to be very helpful to get you talking and then to ask the right questions to "help" the machines test you. When you rang in for a claim form they may have come suspicious of you then!

Also claiming for expensive "newish" items when it was actually a basic "old" model is very common.

Remember they are handling hundreds of calls a day, they have heard it all before and "travel claims" are the known as the biggest try on! They also have age group/ item claimed for / chances of an 18 year old having a very expensive camera etc probabilities very well documented!

If you are genuine you have unfortunately all this to overcome!

Best of Luck!
