My truck was damaged in a storm and the insurance company appraised the damage to be $1000.?
After I pay the $250 deductible, can I just pocket the extra $850 and not repair my truck?

First, $1000-$250 = $750.

Second, if you borrowed money to buy the truck there is usually something in the finance contract that speaks to what you can do with the proceeds of an insurance claim. Obviously, they want to maintain the value of the collateral for the loan. Never the less, unless the insurance company makes the check out to you and the lien holder you can probably get away with it.

If you own the truck free and clear then pocket away.

Nysa
Yep you can, if you really want. Once they give you the money, it's yours to do with what you want.

BUT, you need to be aware, that should you have any more damage, they will not pay you for the damage in that area again.

For instance.... someone keys your car. You get paid 500. Before you get it fixed, you wreck your car. They will make you pay them back the 500 in most cases, or at least subtract the 500 from your total.

mkulda
You can choose to not repair the truck, if you wish, but two things come into play.
One.....you will not be reimbursed again if your truck is damaged in another way. In other words, if you don't make repairs, the insurer will deduct the $750 from any future claim payments.

Secondly, your truck loses more resale value when you go to either trade it in or sell it to somebody else.

Badkitty
$750. And yes you can if you don't mind a dented up truck.

The insurance company pays you whether or not you fix your truck is up to you.

Yes, but they will deduct the $1,000 from any future claims they pay out. Also, they might suspend your coverage if you leave the damage unrepaired.
