My house was built before the 1900's, it was vandalized on Friday and 22 panes were shot out by a High powered BB gun. The Home owners insurance just wants to take out the glass in the wood frames and caulk 1/8inch glass back in. My windows are glazed, and the glass is VERY thick...some of the windows are 8ftX5ft. Do I have a right to insist that the whole window be replaced? This is my first claim in 5 yrs. Thanks...Happy Holidays!

I understand that only the glass was broke....but the glass is over 100 yrs old....lead glass and it has been glazed into the frame! Beautiful wood windows....and I have been given a answer of caulk in a 1/8 inch piece of glass...... |

The insurance company should give the the same type of material or something similar to what you had.
I would insist on it. If you disagree with their decision you can call the department of insurance in your state. Insurance is suppose to try to put you back where you were before the claim happened. |

If the glass is the only thing damaged and replacing the glass is a proper repair - then that is what the insurance company will do. They are not required to replace your windows.
You can take the money the insurance company is giving you and combine it with your own money to upgrade your windows and replace them. And if you were wanting to upgrade to a more energy efficient window, that would be the way to do it. |

If only the glass was broken, only the glass needs to be replaced.
Insurance companies don't upgrade from the old single pane glass windows that leak all that air, to the nice double pane ones.
You can pay for the difference yourself. |

Right, they didn't break the window they only broke the glass so that's what you get replaced.
If they broke the window on your car you wouldn't get the whole door replaced. Makes perfect sense. |

If you wanted coverage for the old style of glass you apparently have, you would have had to call that out to the insurer on a special addendum to the policy, and would have been required to pay a substantially increased premium to cover such a special situation.
A conventional insurance policy isn't going to cover such a 'restoration repair', if that is what you want to call same.
In any event, the insurer isn't going to replace an entire window, including a frame, simply because some of the panes were broken during vandalism. Your best bet is to take the monies offered as a settlement and contribute the additional to have the windows repaired to the extent which you desire. |

If your glass was special they should replace it with the same quality. If you want to replace your frames ask for the glass money instead of glass replacement to use as down payment. |
