NYPD widows' pensions?
Recently, a 20-something year old off-duty NYPD police officer was killed in a car crash in my area. Toxicology reports indicate that his blood level was twice over the legal limit...therefore, he was drunk at the time of the accident. In light of this, does his widow still receive a pension? In my opinion, driving drunk is a form of suicide, and I know that life insurance companies don't pay them, but would the NYPD have to?

It's not a suicide. However, the answer to your question depends on the specifics of the pension plan. A 20-year old officer (?) would not have had time to accumulate much in a pension plan, and pension plans are not structured the same as life insurance policies.

Driving drunk is not considered the same as a genuine intention to kill yourself which is what suicide is. Thousands of drivers every week drive drunk - some are caught following an accident and others are caught as a result of their erratic driving

Pensions are not tied in to cause of death. And you're wrong, most private life insurance policies WOULD pay for suicide, not that this death is really a suicide, after the first couple years.

It should not affect the widow's pension.
