MO | Need surgery and don't have the money. What can I do? |
I just found out that I need to have surgery to remove a very large ovarian cyst. The estimated amount for the surgery including hospital charges, doctor fees, and anesthesiologist fees is $12,000.
I am a stay at home mom with 5 kids. My husband works very hard to support us, and his income is too high to qualify us for medicaid. We recently changed insurance plans after our first one went up, and our new insurance is $800 per month for the family, but the deductible is $5,000.
We don't have the $5,000 right now to hand over to cover the deductible or the 20% of the remaining amount over $5,000 to $12,000.
What do people do in this situation. Even if I negotiated a lower rate to pay cash, we still couldn't come up with even half of that right now. Christmas is just around the corner, as well as 3 birthdays, and we just don't have much income left each month after everything is paid.
Any ideas on what I can do? Additional Details Sorry if I wasn't clear. The surgery is $12,000, the deductible of $5,000 has to be met first, then the insurance company will cover 80% of the remainder, and I am responsible for 20% or $1400. My out of pocket amount would be $6400.
If I paid cash instead, I could get a 40% discount, and pay $7200. However, all of those amounts are much more than we can pay right now. |

The hospital will usually work with you. Even though you have to pay the deductible "first", in reality the hospital will first send the bill to the insurance company. The insurance company will deduct the deductible and co-insurance as your portion and will pay the remainder, so the hospital will get $5600 as soon as the claim is processed. You can set up payments with the hospital for your share. |

1. Call your Department of Job & Family Services. There are other community or social programs that may be available where you live that may be able to provide some cash even if you don't qualify for Medicaid. Also try Catholic Charities, or if you belong to a church, as them to help -- I have seen people do car washes and all sorts of things, and sometimes, they just get a donation from their church, depending on how much money the church has.
2. If you can't find any programs make a payment plan with the hospital. Ovarian cysts can be dangerous, prone to torsion and you don't want that to happen. If left untouched, you can literally be risking your life. I had surgery for cysts, and I know what you mean ... mine was right around $1100 and I still had to pay $900 after the insurance.
Hope this helps. God bless you. |

Talk to a church in your area. The y might not be able to pay for all of it, but most will at least hold a fundraising event or such to help you.
God bless.

Who told you this was $12,000? If that's the "retail" price, likely the insurance discounted cost will be well under your $5,000. Check with your insurer.
Then you'll just have to work out a payment plan for the hospital. The kids will have to have a scant Christmas this year. Harsh, but many kids have NOTHING for Christmas - so it might be a 'spirit of the holiday' for your family.
You have five little people depending on you. You have to take care of your health first, and worry about the money later. |

You may not have to pay the $5000 deductible. You say the operation is $12,000 and a 20% deductible. I have been having a similar situation, and I have worked with three insurance companies over three years, and three jobs. My expenses have been 20% of the $12,000 or $2400. You can pay this over time. This $2400 goes against your $5000 deductible. If you need additional medical attention, they will do a 20% co pay until you hit your $5000. $2400 is still a lot of money, but less than half of what you are expecting. According to money magazine, you can sometimes negotiate fees ahead of time lowering your costs. Good luck. |

Shop around with different doctors and hospitals to see what their costs would be. While you may not have enouogh money, your family seems to have more than most.
See if your doctors will negotiate their fees. You will be surprised that a lot of doctors will and ask if they will accept a payment plan.
Maybe if you have a credit card you could use that, or a small loan from somewhere, maybe your religious institution. But you probly already thought of that.
A fundraiser also is a good idea like the other poster said.
Good Luck!! Oh, and put your health first before Christmas. Maybe this year your family can volunteer at a homeless shelter and get some enjoyment out of helping others. |

I am sorry to hear that you are in that kind of boat. IT is not too often I hear of an employer having that high of a deductible on their plan. It must be a small employer. Is there flexible spending available? Does the employer use AFLAC? Some AFLAC policies will pay part of the deductible. Is there a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) available?
Other than that, you will have to see if the hospital will consider a payment plan. |
