My family have this health insurance - healthplans.my-age.net
It is affordable and has good coverage for dental issues.

I agree with the remarks of the answer above. I am surprised that he does not have a government sponsored health plan via. the school. The janitorial job feels like like employment that your dad does find taxing. He might consider continuing to work the school job for another year or so. He most certainly should speech with a Social Security office about the kick in date of his Medicare coverage. I know the Pearisburg, Va. region and cannot see the attraction of retirement as he has the summer to fish. If your dad has major medical problems, then he should seek a Social Security Disability solution to his insurance needs. The cost in the private insurer would be too high for person on a budget.

I am sorry to say that at age 64 contrary to what all the adds on television tell us affordable health insurance at this age is just impossible to find especially with what is called a pre existing condition. To an insurance company this could mean anything from a hang nail to are you still alive. Though the bad new is that your father is 64 it is also the good news. In just one year he will be eligible for Medicare. He may also be eligible for other wrap around programs offered by the state where he lives. He can apply for Social Security Disability now. Often this pays better than normal Social Security. If he decides to go the disability route I personally suggest the Law Firm of Binder and Binder. There is no fee unless they win his case. If they win they are paid from your fathers award in the amount of 25% of the back balance collected. That is all that they collect. Good Luck To You And Your Father Bob

Depending on his health and exact age he may have a difficult time finding an individual policy at any price. Most insurance companies will not write a policy on someone age 64 and none will write a policy at age 64 1/2. This is because it takes the insurance company about 6 months of premium just to recoup the cost of issuing the policy and most people go on Medicare at 65. If he has pre-existing conditions he may not qualify at all or those conditions won't be covered.

Short term policies are available up to 64 1/2. They have a very reasonable premium but are only designed for catastrophic coverage. They will not cover any pre-existing conditions but in most cases will accept him with those conditions.

Your location does matter because insurance is specific to your area. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies for assistance finding a policy. There is no extra charge using an agent.

Assuming he's perfectly healthy and not overweight, I don't know of any insurance companies that are going to insure him, for under $600 a month. If he's NOT perfectly healthy or overweight, they aren't likely to take him at all.

See, he'd only have it for a year, but their RISK of a very expensive claim is very, very high.

Anyone offering you a "bargain" is either scamming you, or selling you a VERY limited plan, or selling you a discount plan that doesn't PAY anything.

You get what you pay for.

Most of the time, people have to work until they are 65 and qualify for Medicare.

EVERYONE is on a budget. EVERYONE has a fixed income, if you're name isn't Paris Hilton or Bill Gates. We all have to be careful. And most of the time, we all have to work for our health insurance benefits.
