Danielle | No health insurance or income...need surgery for leg. What to do? |
My boyfriend tore his ACL in his leg. It did not happen at his home so he cannot clain homeowners insurance on it.
Since he can't walk, he can't work either. His job requires heavy lifting and walking. His job also offered no health insurance, sick pay, vacation pay or anything.
He is down to nothing in his bank account...and the doctors are telling him he must have surgery on his leg. However, the expected cost is over 10,000 dollars. He also has car insurance bills, car payment bills, and cell phone bills to pay.
He would rather not have to make payments on this bill because he does not make enough in the first place.
WHAT CAN HE DO!!?!?
HELP!
He is 23 and we live in Oregon. |

First of all, homeowners doesn't pay for your injuries - only health insurance does that.
If he needs to have this surgery, he should have it - and work out a payment schedule with the hospital. He should sell the car, then he won't need car insurance. It's going to be a while anyway before he can drive. Ditch the cell phone - he can't afford it right now, he's unemployed.
First priority needs to be food. Then, getting the surgery so he can get back to work. $10,000 really isn't that much in the long run - he probably owes WAY more than that on the car.
Once he's healed, he can find another job, and take the bus for a while, until he's worked a few weeks and has a couple paychecks, and can buy an old junker for $1,000. It will cost WAY less to insure than a new car. If it only runs for three months, he's ahead of the game, as I'm sure $1,000 wouldn't cover three months car payments. Every month over three that this junker runs, is a free car month. After three months, you sell it to someone else for $1,000, and buy a $2,000 junker. It's an upgrade, still no loan.
And, he's got a leg to stand on. |

You need to go to your local hospital and talk to the financial department and explain to them the situation you are in. They should be able to tell you what charity programs they have that could help you. He may even qualify for the spin down program with medicaid. Which means that he would have to pay a small percentage of the total bill and they would pay the rest. If this was the case you can make payment arrangements with the hospital for his percentage and would be able to go ahead with the surgery. Don't be affraid to ask people for help. Hospitals and different organizations hold fund raisers all the time to help people pay medical bills in the type of situation you are describing.
The bottom line is ask ask ask. If one hospital is unable to help then go to another hospital and ask them the same thing. |

He should first talk to the human resources person at his job just to see if anything is available via government help since the job doesn't provide health coverage. He should also see what Oregon has to offer--in California, we have SDI which is a statewide disability insurance that is taken out of every paycheck. The US government also has Medicaid and Medicare which you should also look into. |

If he owns no property, go the the hospital and tell them what ou need and that you have no income.
If you own a house, then they will put a lien on it. |

many if not all hospitals have charity care policies where they will discount or absorb the cost of medical care for people who make less than a specified amount. however, you do have to ask, and if they tell you no, go higher up to the administration. many hospitals won't publish their charity care guidelines, you have to ask for them |

For individuals who do not have health insurance or who need financial assistance to cover health care costs, resources are available, including Government-sponsored programs and services supported by nonprofit organizations. Cancer patients and their families should discuss any concerns they may have about health care costs with their physician, medical social worker, or the business office of their hospital or clinic.

In 1946, Congress passed a law that gave hospitals, nursing homes and other health facilities grants and loans for construction and modernization. In return, they agreed to provide a reasonable volume of services to persons unable to pay and to make their services available to all persons residing in the facility’s area. The program stopped providing funds in 1997, but about 300 health care facilities nationwide are still obligated to provide free or reduced-cost care.

He sounds like he must be in pain. The quickest resource that I personally know of is here http://www.YoudeserveHealthcare.com all he has to do is sign up as soon as possible and can use it within 24-48 hours. There is a hospital advocacy program that will negotiate the lowest possible rate for him! And, they will help negotiate the lowest possible monthly payment. He'll have access to good doctors and physicians, discounts on prescriptions, x-rays, etc. He may not have money, but this is an immediate and affordable option. You can also look up providers by zip, but no matter, he could use the hospital advocacy program. And not to worry, there's a 30-day money back guarantee. Good luck!!! |
