Wm2977 | No insurance, medical bills? |
I used to have med. insurance and my mom kicked me off when I got married and my husband still refused to carry me on his. He and I are getting a divorce and I have none now...
Last night I went to the ER for food poisoning. I told them I have no insurance, am a full-time college student and have no money.
They said, be certain you will have to pay something...
About how much might I have to pay? If I have no money, can they put it on my credit even though I've told them I dont have money?! |

~~When your receive your bill, call the billing office and ask for a cash discount. Negotiate at least 20 percent and try for even more, it doesn't hurt to negotiate.
After you get the discount worked out, then tell them how much you can afford to pay monthly. Make sure you pay this amount, always on time, and never miss one. Then this will keep you from collections.~~ |

Of course they can put it on your credit, if you don't make some sort of payment arrangements and honor same. You DID have the services, didn't you ? Do you somehow think that informing them you have no money changes the fact that you owe the money ?
You made a goodly sized error in going to the ER, instead of to a walk-in clinic of some sort. Food poisoning (doubtful that's what you had) is uncomfortable, but rarely fatal.
mbrcatz is quite correct. You mother didn't 'kick you off'. When you married, you became ineligible under her policy terms. And you still managed to marry that loser who would not insure you on HIS policy ?
Methinks you are going to learn MANY such lessons in the near future, if you don't and won't wise up. |

Well the good news is that since you're still married you're husband will still be responsible for the bills too. And, since he's the one that chose not to put you on the insurance you should stick him with the bill. |

Contact the hospital's billing/business office to find out the charges and work out a payment plan. Try to avoid using ERs if an urgent care clinic will do instead. ERs are much more expensive. |

When the bill comes, call the hospital and ask to speak to their financial assistance person. They can usually make payment arrangements with you that you can afford. That should keep it from affecting your credit rating.
What can eventually happen if you don't pay anything is they will send it to collections. If it is still not collected, it will eventually end up in court with a judgement against you. At some point they can even garnish your wages to get the money. |

Your MOM didn't kick you off when you got married. Once you get married, you're considered a grown up, independent person, and not her dependent - so you don't QUALIFY for insurance under mom's plan. Because with the marriage, you're declaring yourself an independent grownup.
Your husband is a jerk for not insuring you, but I understand with a divorce pending, that's not likely to change. Usually walking into the door, and being seen by a doctor, is going to guarantee you at least $700 in charges. If you had any testing done or were given any medication (not prescriptions, you pay for those at the pharmacy), it will be more.
You "might" be able to get it repriced down to a cash price of about $150. That's why it makes sense to NOT use an emergency room - a doctor visit, or even a visit to a local urgent care center, is going to cost WAY less than an emergency room visit - like maybe half.
Yes, they can collect the money from you, and will report it to your credit if you don't pay. Just because you have no money, does NOT mean they are required to work for free, and provide you with free services. You'll have to take on a part time job - or three - to make the money to pay this bill. And at the same time, pay for health insurance, so when it happens again, you'll have coverage.
The next two weeks are PRIME babysitting time - so instead of going out for New Year's, offer to babysit for others. You can ask for $250 for the evening at someone else's house and get it, or bring in five or so kids to your house, for $100 each. Or more. |
