Not telling anyone I bought Life insurance?
If you buy life insurance and don't tell any family members, how can I be sure that the life insurance co. will even find out that I died? How can I be sure that they won't try to get out of paying if no one knows about it to claim it?

The life insurance company has no way to know you're dead, unless someone files a claim. It's usually the FAMILY or BENEFICIARY that notifies them.

If you don't want your family to know you have it, you'll have to hire a lawyer to "manage" this for you - and the year you don't send him a Christmas card - LOL or the fee to hold the policy - he files the claim for you.

Bottom line - if no one files the claim, no one will be paid.

Do you have a will?..........If not.................you should..........that will take care of the issue...........you will need to let one of your family members know where it is...........

You put it in a metal box ( you can buy one at a stationary store --OfficeMax, et) for a few dollars, and put the policy and your important papers in there, Checkbook, bank acct, etc.,

Be sure to tell a close relative if anything happens to you, this is where my important papers are. They don;t have to know what's in there, they should just know that it exists.

It's best to notify your family of at least what they need to do when you die or where they can find your wishes. That's the only way you can be sure the Life insurance company will find out that you died.

Either have a an up to date Will or have a safety deposit box with the policy book in it. You don't have to tell them what's in the safety deposit box, just tell them that if you die that is where your records are and what they need to do/know about your wishes. Include a record of all your important details like bank accounts that need to be closed, Social security number/social insurance number, credit cards that need to be cancelled, etc. Depending on the relationship with them you can tell them where the key is (if it's just a personally owned one in your home), but that depends. When they look in the box they will find the policy.

If the insurance company isn't notified of your death they have no way of knowing to pay it out. If the insurance company doesn't know your dead, your family or beneficiaries won't know about the policy. If your advisor doesn't have direct contact information for your beneficiaries (ussually when you designate a beneficiary they only ask for the name and relationship...if the beneficiary has an unlisted number they are pretty limited in efforts to track down who to apply for the claim) they will have no way of setting up the claim. In many cases the Advisor will find out if they live in your city fairly quickly on their own (either through the obits or when the monthly payment gets rejected from the bank eventually, however, if the policy is the type where you are earning enough dividends to pay the premiums or if it's a paid up policy where you aren't paying premiums on it anymore, they may never know you're dead for years and in some cases decades until after the fact.

Always tell at least one person where they can find your Will or safety deposit box. That's all they need to know is where they can find it or track it down.

It's not that they would try to "get out of paying", they just would have no way of knowing when to pay. It's best to tell close family members or friends, leave a copy of your contract in a conspicuous place or with your other important papers, make sure your attorney records information about it, and so on.

If you buy life insurance to help the people you love, there's no reason to make their financial lives harder when they are already dealing with your loss.
