Okay a few questions to help you answer your own question:
1) If you were to have an accident tomorrow in which you were told you were at fault and you caused $3,000 in damage to the other vehicle and the other driver's airbag deployed resulting in facial lacerations, a broken arm, etc. and another $2,500 in medical bills and a couple of weeks of time to recuperate meaning another $1,700 to cover his lost income, i.e. you now have a total of $7,200 in damages plus the damage to your car which is another $4,500. Do you have enough money in the bank to cover this?
2) If your car was stolen tomorrow and never recovered do you have enough money in the bank to buy another one--and exactly how much did you lose in terms of the vehicle's blue book value--$3,000, $4,000 or more?
3) Is insurance mandatory in your state? If it is would you like to have your license suspended and rack up a bunch of fees?
I am not trying to be mean but I think if you look at this rationally having insurance is absolutely necessary if you own a vehicle!
One final note--if your vehicle's blue book value is low and you are on a tight budget, you can probably get away with removing Comprehensive and Collision coverage leaving liability, uninsured motorist and any medical payments. I suggest that you sit down with your agent & find out what options are available to you.
