OK this ones kinda of a tuffy but really important Please don't ignore!?
I recently had a kidney transplant (a year ago) I was on my fathers insurance, medicare, and medicaid when i had the transplant the medicare people messed up and said it didnt cover the transplant so my dads insurance had to pay for it , and it maxed me out on his insurance. Now i only have medicare and medicaid but medicare is only good for 3 years after a transplant, so in 2 years i'll only have medicaid which doesnt cover sh*t . So what do I do about insurance for i need it cause im disabled and sick. If i get a good job nobodys insurance is gonna want to cover me with my health status.

To the person who didn't know why Medicare would end after 3 years...

This person is likely a young person who only qualified for Medicare through their ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease) program. A person of any age who is diagnosed with ESRD can be eligible for Medicare.

However, 36 months after a successful transplant, the ESRD Medicare expires. (My guess is that's because the renal disease is considered "gone" after that period of time?) If the renal disease was the only thing qualifying the person for Medicare, then they would no longer receive Medicare after that point.

then you need to look into the insurance that your state provides for disabilities....all states have it, it's just different from state to state.

You have several options:

1) If you stay on traditional medicare for the remainder of the time you're eligible, you can purchase a medicare supplement plan IF your state mandates that disabled folks under 65 can enroll (like mine does). Because you recently lost coverage through your father's group insurance plan, you should be eligible to enroll in a med supp plan without having to answer medical questions. Call your state's insurance commissioner's office to discuss your med supp options, since, as I mentioned, they may vary somewhat according to state.

2) If you obtain coverage through a group plan because you become employed, you will not have to worry about your health condition. BOTH Medicare AND Medicaid (Medical Assistance) are considered "group" plans, for the purpose of determining your rights under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Basically, HIPAA enables a person who has at least 18 months of group coverage (without a lapse in between of more than 63 days) to have the duration of that coverage "credited" against a new group plan's pre-existing condition exclusionary period; this eliminates the time you have to wait before your conditions are covered. After you enroll in your new employer's group plan, inquire whether the plan has a pre-ex period (not all of them do). If it does, all you have to do is give them proof that EITHER your Medicare OR Medical Assistance coverage have covered you at least 18 months and have not been terminated more than 63 days.

My daughter is 6 months post-transplant and I have been searching for answers to these questions too. Here's a place where there are other dialysis and transplant patients, families and caregivers who could give you some suggestions and support - they will understand what you are going through - come to the forum at http://www.ihatedialysis.com - it's a online community and you may find some answers there.

I too have some heath Issues I have had two heart attacks and have had a pacemaker since I was five and a defibrillator since I was 16. I was left with out Insurance do to some complications. And was left in the cold. After going to the Doctors on my last day on a plan I was told my Pacemaker had to be changed that would run about 100,000 can we say holy crap. After long nights and pleading to get some coverage I have nothing. I was told to go to the Hospital show them I wasn't covered and show proof I then had to apply for Charity Care through the Hospital and was accepted it covered anything that was done in the Hospital Surgery, doctors visits and dental. It lasts a year at which point you have to apply again. Hope this helps you good luck it's not easy.

I have worked in the employee benefits field for 8 years. You can get on any employer's plan so long as you satisfy the waiting period. Your employer cannot ask you any personal health questions prior to getting hired. You cannot be denied coverage. You may have to satisfy a 12 month pre-exsisting condition waiting period, but that is it. You will have coverage.

I recommend you find a good job with great medical and especially a 30 day or less waiting period. Nothing will bankrupt you sooner in this country than medical debt.

Good Luck. God Bless.

Your pre-existing condition will unfortunately most likely follow you for a preliminary period with each new carrier you elect to go with in the future. Once you get through the preliminary period, they will have to cover your medical expenses but it is a little bit trickier than the "standard" Joe Schmoe getting BC/BS who can get coverage effective immediately by completing some paperwork and submitting it. I wish you well.

Why is medicare only good for three years after a transplant? If you're on SSDI, after 27 months you're ELIGIBLE for medicare . .. but I'm guessing you know more about this than me.

If you get a JOB, well, after you're on the group health insurance a while (usually 6 - 18 months) they DO pick up preexisting conditions. So they only exclude them during, well, the time you still have medicare left.

So I'd look for that job.
