Outside trampolines and homeowners insurance question?
I am thinking about buying a trampoline for my children for the backyard. I recently heard that having one can make your homeowners insurance be outrageous. I don't own my house yet but am in the process of buying it so it just made me curious.

Does anyone know if this is true or not? I'm sure there will rarely be any other children on the trampoline than my own kids, and they do have health insurance if something were to happen to them.

Thanks!
Additional Details
The trampoline I am thinking about getting does have the safety net enclosure.

This is true!! Daycare people aren't suppose to have them either because of insurance reasons. Ask your insurance company if it is all right to have a trampoline with a safety net that goes around it, looks like a in-closed trampoline.

I've never heard of any sort of surcharge or anything for having a trampoline.. I know my company doesn't, but it can make you ineligible depending upon your state and insurance company.

However most are fine with it, so long as it's the type that has the tall, tall netting around it. So make sure your company is okay with trampolines and definitely make sure you've got the netting. The issue with trampolines and homeowners insurance lays on the fact that kids (even ones you don't allow on it) get up on there, flail about, then fall off and break their arm, which is a liability risk. If anyone, even those without permission, jump on that thing and hurt themselves, you're responsible for their injuries because you own it. This is why there are such strict guidelines about it - Mom of little jumper Timmy that broke his leg in three places is going to sue and your homeowners insurance has to pay for it.

Ask your insurance company. They can give you an exact answer.

some of my insured had to get rid of the trampoline in order to keep their home owners insurance (they risked cancellation)

some Ins companies consider trampoline too high of liabilty risk (your kids would not be covered under home owners anyways-it is the other kids parents who will sue) just like wood burning stoves and swimming pools

I live in Utah and most insurance carriers here won't even insure your trampoline and the liability associated with it. Make sure you use the insurance company that will because the last think you need is a lawsuit from the neighbor that your insurance won't pay on.

Your homeowner's policy may not even cover injuries arsing from the use of a trampoline--you will need to check the section of the policy which is called "Exclusions." However, if a non-resident is injured on your trampoline, you may be exposed to liability for their injuries. The best way to determine whether trampoline injuries are covered and whether their will be a premium increase is to contact your carrier or agent. What ever they tell you, you will be prudent to confirm their statements in writing in case it is ever an issue in the future.

When you say "make outrageous" that would mean insurers accept them at a higher rate and that's not true; usually insurers will allow them or not allow them. Why? trampolines are usually #2 or #3 cause of personal injury claims on homeowners policies.
The insurers that allow them will usually place restrictions:
Must have a net
Must be in enclosed yard secured with locking gates.
It will vary based on insurers , you'll have to call and find out.
