acelia i | PPO vs HSA. Which is better? |
My husband's employer no longer will offer HMO's for their employees next year. We have been with our HMO for 7 yrs. He has to choose between a PPO or HSA (health savings acct). We have two healthy school age children. Which insurance is best for a family with small kids? Has anyone had any positive or negative issues with a HSA? PLEASE HELP!! |

I agree with do the math. There a couple of things to keep in mind, though.
1. An HSA has to be part of a high deductible health plan and the minimum is $1100 per person under the IRS regs. But its usually a max of $2200/family (depends on whats offered by your company). However, the deductible must be met BEFORE anything else is covered. And that includes doctor visit and pharmacy copays. So if you are on high blood pressure meds (for example) you will pay the contracted rate (not full price without insurance, but close) until the deductible is met. You will also pay the contracted rate with your docs before the company will pay anything. (The easiest way to find out this amount is to call your doctors office and ask)
2. If you want to keep your copays, go with the PPO and stay in the network. However, even if you are at in-network provider, make sure everyone you see is in your network. The way most people get in trouble when moving from a PPO to an HMO is with the ansthetologists, radiologists and patholgists. They aren't in PPO networks. You will get charged quite a bit from them, because they can charge whatever they want. When you are on an HMO, they have to take the HMO rate to work with the hospital, PCP, etc. This is true for the HSA, too.
If a $500 hit won't destroy your bank balance (and assuming its cheaper) I would go with the HSA. If you need copays, go with the PPO.
Good luck and I hope this helps! |

Reviews aren't mixed and it doesn't matter whether you have many claims, few claims, are young, old, etc....
You just have to do the math.

HSA gives you the ability to spend $1 with tax-free cash. You would have to see what the deductible is with the HSA because you must have a high deductible insurance plan to qualify. Is the deductible to high if you get an HSA is the question!! |

If you go with the HSA type of plan, you might want to consider insuring the children with a second insurance to help out with the "bumps & bruises" normally associated with growing up. This can help with the typical out of pocket expenses associated with the high deductibles that HSA plans have.
United Healthcare offers "kids only" health insurance plans that provide children's coverage for sickness and accidents. Their plans are written through school districts and many private K12 schools throughout the US. Their health plan (at just $98 every 2 months) is designed to be more affordable than an individual policy. Check out www.k12studentinsurance.com or www.covermykid.com to see if your child's school district or private school is participating. Click on the "Plans & Pricing" tab, enter the district name or private school name in the search box and review the plans. |

There is no correct answer. In some cases, an HSA with preventive coverage and Network wrote-downs will be the best option. However, when children are involved, PPOs may be the best option.
Rates vary by state and HSA prices can wildly fluctuate. It is best to contact a broker in your area with AT LEAST 20 years of experience.

HSA is usually coupled with a high deductible health plan (HDHP) insurance policy. Reviews are mixed, but generally HSA/HDHP plans are better for younger people who generally have fewer health problems. |
