My previous car insurer has cancelled my policy 3 month into the policy. They said they would pay me for the 9 months i had left. The thing is they paid me it on the 22nd august by the correct amount and then, paid me the money again on the 23rd, so ive been paid twice. can thy take it back out of my account without asking my permission? |

Stick it in a savings account and forget about it for a year. if they write asking for it back then ignore them. If they start getting nasty (i.e. a letter saying they will due in 14 days) then send it back.
With me they wrote three letters then dropped it - result. |

As far as I'm aware they can ask the bank for the money to be returned. It's not your money and you will be comiting an offence if you spend it. |

The legal position is that if money is paid to you in error then the person who paid it can demand it back - witness cases in the press where people have spent money given to them by mistake and ended up in court on theft charges.
I have a case where a client was paying on direct debit and the insurance company on cancellation paid them the money instead of to the finance company that had given the loan. I have advised the client that the money is not his and waiting for a refund before I call the police in. |

They should not take it from the bank particularly if you cancel all direct debits but they may well ask for it back. Lucky you, ours kept taking our money long after we cancelled the policy and we had a helll of a job to get it back. |

wow- lucky you! no they cant take it out your account! and since you do not insure with them no more they have no reason to have yor bank details on file! especially card and account numbers. this will only happen with government run plcs like the socila security and job centre n things! dont worry- have fun |

They will probably see this as an accountancy error and will pursue you for the money. Watch you don't end up with costs if you try to keep hold of it. |

If you are confident that you have received a double refund, the honest thing to do is to return the money to them.
In addition to the honesty issue, and that should really be the only driving factor here, there are insurance fraud laws that come into play. And if you are convicted of insurance fraud you can go to jail. So ask yourself if it's worth the risk. |

They will probably contact you, not just debit your account.
Don't spend the money, contact them if anything... You could get into a lot of trouble if that money was spent, even if it was there accident. |
