Parents own car and insurance but im moving to California with it.?
My parents own the car and the car insurance is under their name. Im pay them montly but its cheaper that why i think. Im planning on moving to California in june but I need to take the car with me. Is it ok if I jus take it over their with no problem or do i need to put the car under my name as well as the car insurance? but i rather not change anything. thanks Additional Details My parents car insurance is All State.
If the car is owned by your parents and registered in their state, they have to insure it on their policy. Its no different than when a child leaves the state to go to college.
To be absolutely safe, I would recommend calling the agent and letting him know that the car will be garaged in California.

You will need to have your name put on the title and get your own insurance since the policy your parents currently have the car listed as being garaged in a different state than CA.

The company who you now have ins with may not be doing business in California.
You run the risk of getting into an accident and having the ins so say " sorry, we don't insure cars that are based in California."

Best thing you can do for yourself and your parents is have the car changed under your name with your own insurance. Why is it good for your parents? You are taking the liability away from them. For example you get into an accident, since the car is no longer registered to them they are not responsible in anyway-financially. As for you, if you keep as is, your current carrier may find out after the accident that you live in a different state. Insurance policies, in their Conditions sections, have a clause that says if garaged elsewhere you must notify them immediately. Since different state, different rules apply and therefore your parents' carrier is going to say you have to get a different policy. Look you never want to find out after the fact that the carrier denies not only the damage to your car but also the damage and injuries you are responsible for.
