Katrina | Picking out life insurance for myself and family -- help? |
We have all decided that life insurance is a good idea for each person. But because we are all different, we're having trouble finding a good company. And yes, I know that meeting with an insurance broker is the smart thing to do but before we go ahead and do that we want to do some investigating online first ... sales people are always pushy and annoying so until we are 100% ready we don't want to go that route yet. We're just "window shopping" so to speak.
Myself:
Age 20
Healthy, Non-smoker
No alcohol
Mom
Age 48
Healthy, recently quit smoking
No alcohol
Her husband
Age 40
Moderate health, smoker
No alcohol
Sister
Age 13
No smoking, No alcohol and Healthy
Born preemie and heart murmur as infant
(It may seem odd to you that we would include her in this but if she passes we want to be sure that we can cover a funeral)
We'd be okay with individual companies. Can someone give us a general idea of a good insurance company in the US with good rates? Or direct us to a website that can generate quotes for companies. |

Hello there. A long time ago, i sold life insurance. First, look at level term - its cheap and good insurance. Next, remember what the purpose of insurance is - to protect the family in the event of the loss of the income stream produced by that individual. So, if dad works and makes 80k a year, you need at Least 800k in life insurance on him ie you put 800k in investments earn about 10% that replaces his 8ok to the family. Now, same with mom - make sure we cover her enough to be able to hire someone to replace her income, or what she does ie clean house etc. Your sister, chances are needs none unless she earns money for the family. The same with you. Go do a independent agent - ie not farmers or allstate, let that agent shop for you. good luck and i'm proud that your family is doing the responsible thing. my last thought, the 10x your income rule is the bare minimum, try and get more if you can afford it. |

Caveat Emptor

Before you worry about specific companies, first you need to make the fundamental decisions about HOW MUCH coverage you need and WHAT KIND of policy (term vs. whole life) is best for you.
You say you've decided that life insurance "is a good idea" for each person. Why? What is to be the purpose served by that insurance? What is the need for it? |

Nope. The insurance company that's best for your mom, is probably not going to be the one best for you.
Website links you'll get, pretty much all harvest your personal information to sell it as leads to hundreds of agents.
The reason why you'll get referred to a broker, is because there's no one company that's cheapest for EVERYONE.
So, since you want to research online, do some thinking - heavy thinking - about what the GOAL is, for each of the policies. And read yahoo personal finance about life insurance, and the Dave Ramsey "truth about life insurance" page. If you have a concrete goal set (like paying for sis's funeral), BEFORE you talk to the broker, then you won't be easily sold on something you don't need. |

Obviously price is a consideration, but strength of company and even the relationship with the agent or broker is important. Assuming price and strength of company are about equal, working with someone you trust and feel comfortable with is very important.
Another thing- just because a broker may have multiple carriers they can offer and CAN get you the cheapest of those, it doesn't mean they WILL get you the cheapest. Commissions vary from carrier to carrier and some brokers (not all) will sell based on commission or they may jsut have their go to carriers they like for varying reasons and may not shop it. So they do not always show you the cheapest.( Of course, I also say that cheapest may not be the best value). I offered a disability policy to someone that was less expensive and offered better benifits than what the broker offered. This person showed my quote to the broker who then sold her the same thing from my carrier. The broker kept the business because of an existing relationship. Why did it take seeing my quote to provide a policy that was less expensive and richer in benefits? The lesson- going through a broker does not always result in the least expensive/best policy for you. |
