Please help me find homeowners' insurance that will cover my dog.?
My two dogs were involved in a fight with another dog last year. All three dogs were bitten, and my homeowners' insurance paid out a claim. They have now sent a notice of non-renewal and I am having trouble finding an insurance company that will write a new policy. Does anyone have any suggestions for an insurance company or broker in California that can help? Thank you!

To clarify, I am not looking for "pet insurance" to cover my own dogs' vet bills. This is purely a homeowners' policy to cover third-party liability claims.

Yeah, the dogs can be a problem.

First step: use an on-line source to get multiple quotes. You'll get the quotes and phone calls. Right out of the gate, tell them about the dog situation -if it has not already been disclosed when you fill out the on-line application. See who can "handle" it.

At the same time, get in touch with the largest independent agent you can find and get them to work on it.

A creative alternative is to accept an exclusion for claims of injury or damage arising from the ownership, or custody dogs, and THEN buy a liability policy for JUST that kind of claim. A large independent agency will know how to pursue this possibility.

Also check veterinarians to see if any know of a source of liability (not health) coverage for dogs. They of all people will have had customers with the same problem as yours.

As a last resort, you may appeal the non-renewal notice to the state insurance commission -start off with a visit to their website or a call.

Chances are, there will be coverage somewhere -but at a PRICE. You may need to say "so long" to the pets.

Sorry.

Oops! Now I see a very wrong answer to your question, so let me head that off right away. What you have is a liability situation, which homeowners DOES cover.

Pet insurance is primarily health and medical coverage for the pet itself -it is not designed to pay for claims on account of damage or injury to someone else, that person's property or some other animal CAUSED by the dog. The only exception to this that I am aware of "3rd party property damage" which allows a small amount for damage caused by a dog to an apartment (it is for people who rent a place and have a dog).

Foremost Insurance will write a policy, but EXCLUDE coverage for the dog. NO ONE will cover a dog that's already been involved in a claim. They just won't. Your choice is to move to Foremost and pay double for your insurance with a dog exclusion, get rid of the dog, or go without homeowners insurance.

No doubt the easiest way to get insurance quotes is on the web.
Why would you waste your time on the phone calling around?
the last time i needed quotes on insurance i used one of these comparison sites and it was great.
this is the site i used and it was quick like less than 5 mins.
The last thing I want to do is listen to elevator music while waiting for a salesman.
Anyway I got good quotes and ended up saving money so I was happy.
So shop around and compare quotes which is easy on the net.
Good starting point is at this site.

Good luck.

yeah that's going to be tough to find insurance. your best bet is to call a local agency that can do the shopping around for you. they would also be more familiar with who will take on a policy like that. unfortunately, dogs, espially w/ "bite history", are a big liability that insurance companies don't want.

ernesto_tig
Yeah what she said, the dog bite claim will show up on your HO CLUE report for the next five years. Unless you get rid of the dogs, Foremost is your best bet.

Your policy paid out a claim for a dog that was bitten? I can die now, I've heard it all. Could you have paid it yourself and not gotten you insurance company involved maybe?

Some states have a FAIR plan or state run program for otherwise uninsurable properties. Your agent should be able to hook you up if that's an option.

To my knowledge there is no such thing what you need in insurance on you dog called pet insurance. This website might help you.
