Pregnant but insurance doesn't kick in until October 1st?
I just found out the other day that I am 5 weeks pregnant. So I haven't been to the doctor yet, I've just had a positive pregnancy test. I got a new job which has Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance but that doesn't kick in until October 1st. If I wait until after October 1st to have my first appointment, will they consider it preexisting or will they cover the pregnancy?

Likely it will be considered pre-existing, unless this is from a group policy, and you've had prior group coverage within the past 63 days.

Go to the doctor! =)

They will cover the pregancy. Pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing condition on any group employer sponsored plan.

It can only be pre-existing on private, individual, or supplemental policies (i.e. you likely will not be eligible for the Short Term Disability policy).

Just to be safe - you should probably talk to your HR/Benefits person. They usually want to do what they can to work with you and make sure you are covered...

I'm not quite sure on the *current* laws in each state~nor am I too informed on the situation, but sometimes they do consider it preexisting, but if it is not confirmed, then they cannot decline you. My advice would be to hold off and make an appointment after your insurance kicks in and inform them you suspect you might be pregnant. That way you are safe all around. Its only a couple more days. Good luck to you and congratulations!

Exactly what the others said. Pregnancy is not a pre-existing condition so you have nothing to worry about.

I suppose your employer's contract with BC/BS could specify that, but I don't think pregnancy is typically considered a pre-existing condition. It would be covered.

However, any doctor's visits, test, etc. that you have prior to October 1 will not be covered.

Most group insurance plans don't have a pre-existing clause for pregnancy, so as of October 1, your insurance should cover everything. Good luck!

Maternity is not considered a pre-existing condition on most Blue Cross group plans. Contact your HR person, or Blue Cross in your state to verify this. You need not give your personal information to Blue Cross to ask a general question such as this. Chances are that you have nothing to worry about.

Wanna-Be-Mommy
They should cover the pregnancy, no problem. I think they usually see you at 8 weeks for your first appointment anyway, so waiting until October 1st should not be a problem. Maybe call and ask the doctor what they suggest. Good luck and congratulations on the pregnancy!

kimberwilkins
Pre-existing conditions are medical conditions for which you have sought treatment or medical advice within a specific timeframe prior to the effective date of your health insurance coverage (usually 12-18 months).

If you have not had the pregnancy confirmed through your doctor, then you should be just fine = no pre-ex.

Good luck & congratulations!
