Pregnant girlfreind and i are not married what kind of insurance should she apply for?
I am 22 years old and my girlfriend is the same age, she is 23 weeks pregnant. I earn over $50,000.00 a year and she earns around $23,000.00 but since we are not married I cannot put her onto my insurance. We live in California and we are trying to avoid the courthouse wedding idea. I know that there are a lot of programs we can apply for such as medi cal. However i was told that she would probably not be approved for it if her and I are together, and that Medi cal would then go after me to pay some of the bills, we have credit problems and cannot afford to pay much for insurance since our money is tied up. Does anyone know if medi cal or any of these other programs would go after me (the father) for any of the bills? I am not a deadbeat dad or trying to avoid paying for my own child, i just want to find out if there is an easier way to get insurance than paying out 500 or more dollars

Yes, well, what's wrong with you flat out paying for it? I'm not going to call you any names. You don't want to marry her, and you want ME, the TAXPAYER, to pay for the medical costs of YOUR baby.

If she wants to put the baby up for private adoption, she can probably get all the medical bills paid by the mom and dad.

You make over 50K and want her to get insurance? You are going to end up in court because you are the father with the income that will put this child on your program. In the meantime, pony up for the med checkups and all the other natals you can think of. You can't procreate and then dump on the citizens of California. Period!

Talk to your employer. If you live together in California, there is some precedent for getting her covered as a non-registered, domestic partner: IF YOUR EMPLOYER ALLOWS IT.

If, between the two of you, you make $73k, there is no way for you to qualify for Medi-cal. Even with her income at $23,000 there's a pretty good chance she won't qualify for it by herself either.

Outside of an employer sponsor HMO, you'll probably be paying for the pregnancy out of pocket. So talk to your employer. At 22 if you're making $50k a year, there's a good chance you're in a valuable enough position that your boss may consider working with you on this to find a solution. You may want to start with HR...

Good luck.

This is similar to buying car insurance after you have an accident. If insurance companies allowed your scheme, they would all soon go out of business. Nobody would buy insurance until they got sick or became pregnant. That way insurance companies would lose money on everybody they insured. Bottom line you are trying to pawn off the cost of this pregnancy on others. Whether it be the insurance company or the other policy holders who are stuck with paying higher rates due to scammers such as yourself. You say you're not a deadbeat dad, but only because you're trying to pass the cost of your actions onto others. Which is pretty much the same as being a deadbeat dad. Next time before you get somebody pregnant, either marry the woman or buy her health insurance before you get her in that condition.

Even if you marry today and add her to your group coverage, they would exclude the pregnancy as a preexisting condition.

O.k. let me first say that I understand what you are asking here and I don't think it is to take advantage of anything. It seems as though you are looking into what options are
available, since you are young and may not understand exactly what is available.

That being said I believe I can help you!
There is a company called Ameriplan USA... they cover all pre-existing conditions... even pregnancy. They are a discount health benefits company who, unlike insurance companies, actually contract with doctors and dentists to offer a discounted price for their members!

For example, if you have to be hospitalized (her for the birth) you can go to any hospital of your choice, and if the bill is over $2500 (which it most definitely will be) they have an advocate who works directly with the hospital to get the bills lowered as much as is possible for you (typically 50% at the very least) and then you can set up an interest free payment plan to pay the hospital.

The complete Health plan is $39.95/mo and would cover everyone in your household, regardless of relation, (doesn't matter if you are married yet or not...) In that you would get Physician, specialist, dental, vision, prescription, chiropractic care, along with the hospital and ancillary services.

Not only will you save on the actual birth, you can also save on each prenatal doctors visit, any testing that needs to be done, and even ultrasounds.

You can see the plans at this website... http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/40398854 and please call me for details, because I am sure you'll have questions.

I use this plan personally, as well as many of my friends and family.

I sure hope this helps you out! (And don't worry about what others say... we don't know what sort of situation you are in financially, and I know that I would want to research any available options to save some money whether it be on health care or groceries!)

Good Luck! and let me know if I can help at all.
