My husband and I are expecting twins in late August (that probably equates to mid-August since twins don't usually go the whole 40 weeks).
Anyway, the open enrollment period for his insurance is in early September. There is pretty much no way they'll be born once open enrollment starts.
It was my understanding that birth is a "qualifying event," insurance-wise, so that once our kids are born they should be covered. When he approached his insurance rep with this, she stated very rudely, "You had the chance to enroll your wife last year, but you didn't take it. Now you'll have to wait." (I was working, I had my own insurance). Whatever - OK, fine for ME, but what about our CHILDREN?? What do they have to do with my not being enrolled?? It makes no sense to me.
My husband's insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield, and we live in Texas, if that helps. |

Yes, as long as your husband's employer offers family coverage, he'll be able to add the children (and you) when they are born.
Perhaps the HR person misunderstood and thought that your husband was trying to add you right now???? |

Yes, the birth will be a qualifying event. He will be able to switch from an individual plan to a family plan at that time, and add the kids (and you, also), as long as he does it within 30 days of the birth. |

It should be a qualifying event for the newborns although you may have to wait until the open enrollment. Have him read the group policy himself to be sure - don't take the "insurance rep's" word for it. |

The insurance rep is an idiot or misunderstood. You absolutely should be able to add your kids after their birth. |

The birth of a child is a "qualifying event." The children will be covered from the minute they are born. You usually have a period of time to add them to the policy. You should go around the insurance rep and give your benefits line a call. The number should be on your husbands id card. good luck with the babies. |

Time to go to the next level if your HR didn't help, then it's time to go to the district and get some real answers. No matter when you were enrolled, the babies will be enrolled as well. What a rotten person she was! |
