Lauren658 | Question about Cobra Insurance? |
My husband recently lost his job because is was working a part-time job on the weekend (We didn't know he wasn't aloud to do this). We have been paying $200 a month for health insurance (2 adl + 1 child). We received our cobra payment and they said it is $1200 a month. Are they aloud to charge this much. We can't afford this so we are just going to get the baby health insurance. We can't take private insurance because of my pre-existing condition. I just wanted to make sure. Thanks! |

Well, you know it's not your employer that charges it, right? You're paying the same amount that it cost to insure your family before he lost his job, plus 2% administration costs.
I know you're saying, it only cost YOU $200 a month. That's because your employer was paying the OTHER $1000 a month, as part of the benefits.
The average family plan, it just costs $1200 a month. You are NOT getting rooked here, you just had no idea how much the employer was paying.
If you don't take the cobra, and don't take private insurance because of the preexisting condition, you'd just better be aware, that if he DOES find a new job, THEY don't have to cover your preexisting condition for 18 entire months. And depending on what that is, it could end up being a whole lot more than $1200 a month.
Hmm. And one last comment . . .I don't know what he does, but it's not particularly likely that you'll find an employer willing to give you THAT much insurance with that little payment. Our family, my husband's got GREAT insurance, and WE pay $600 a month for it.
** and unless you're in a guaranteed issue state like NJ or HI, an insurance company CAN refuse to cover a preexisting condition on a private policy, EVEN if the lapse is less than 63 days. That 63 day rule, is going from one group policy, to ANOTHER group policy. NOT a private policy.** |

You had only been paying $200 per month for health insurance, but the employer was also contributing to the premium.
When you go on COBRA, you are responsible for 100% of the premium (what you were paying + what the employer was contributing) and a small administrative fee (generally 2%).
So, they aren't "charging more" for your insurance now. Your husband's employer just isn't covering part of the costs any more. |

COBRA is limited to the total the amount that was being paid for insurance, by the employer and by the employee, plus a small percentage for administrative expenses. For example, if the employer was paying $1000 per month and you were paying $200 per month, then they are allowed to charge $1200 plus the small percentage for administrative expenses. However, if the employer was paying only $800 per month, then they are not allowed to charge $1200, because that would be 20% more than the old combined cost of $1000 ($800+$200). |

Yes....your husbands job was paying a portion of the insurance. Since he is no londer working there....your family is paying it all. I am an agent and sell people other options than cobra.......it is way to expensive to pay on your own. Look into private insurance....not a major medical.....but a per incident basis. |

Many sections to your questions - here are the answers:
Always read the company handbook, as they usually have a section about moonlighting.
$200 a month is most likely the employee contribution to the amount of premium the company pays. Your COBRA paperwork will tell you exactly how much you have to pay monthly in order to maintain your insurance, which is usually 100% of the premium + 2% in administrative fees.
You ARE allowed however to pick and choose which members of your family elect the COBRA coverage, so if only you and the baby need coverage, you can elect that at the Single + 1 rate which should be listed as an option on the paperwork.
You ONLY have a pre-existing condition, if you've gone without medical coverage for 63 days or more OR have had less 12 months of prior coverage. You are always able to purchase a private policy without a pre-ex clause if you have had 12 months of creditable coverage without a 63 day lapse. So even if you have to elect COBRA for one month, while searching for a private policy, it's better to do that than go without coverage, to ensure you don't have a pre-existing condition added into your policy.
I'm happy to help you offline if you need clarification on any of this.
