So I am a college student living away from home dealing with an eating disorder issue. I've decided I need to go see a therapist. I found one online who takes my insurance but I am under my mothers insurance. I don't really want her to know so my question is can I just take my insurance card go see a therapist and pay the co pay without her getting involved thanks. |

Since it is your mother's insurance, she will probably get an Explanation of Benefits form showing the doctor, the charges, the co-pay, etc. |

Yes and No. Yes if you take some steps before hand like changing your mailing address so your EOBs get sent to you. But it could be tough to catch everything.
My suggestion...tell your mom. You will need support to overcome your problem and families want to help. You have taken a huge step in seeking out help...don't let whether the EOBs will go to your mom keep you from getting better!! |

~~Yes you can see the therapist and if you are over 18 no medical information can be released without your written permission.
Having said that I have to add is if you have anything other than an HMO insurance (which you would have to have a primary care doctor give you a referral to see a specialist) and the EOB's (explanation of benefits) will be mailed to the policy holders address. It will only show the doctor's name, date of service, procedure code, and amount of the charge. Then it will show the contractual discount, and finally the amount you are responsible to pay.
If you are not sure what type of insurance you have, call the 800 number on the back of your card and find out exactly what steps you need to take to see the therapist BEFORE you see one. Reason is if you don't go thru the right steps you could end up paying the full charge of the visit.~~ |
