Question about car wreck & medical bills?!?!?
If your in a car accident and paramedics come and ask you if you want to be taking to the hospital and you refuse and then they said they dont think you are not of sound mind because of the wreck and they forcible take you to the emergency room anyways even though you keep protesting. And at the hospital they run test and find nothing is wrong. Who is responsible for the bill. It doesnt really seem fair to make someone pay a crazy high bill when they said they didnt want to go and that they were fine.

You are.

My mother in law got in a fight with someone, and they called the paramedics on her, and the ambulance came, and she refused to go . . . and the ambulance left without her. They put the bill into collections - she didn't even call them.

If you have personal injury protection coverage or medical payments under your auto policy, submit the bill to your car insurance policy.

you are responsible, i know its sounds stupid but, if they felt you was not in your right state of mind then they are allowed to take you to the hospital. I would talk with the hospital and get a payment plan or something then you can pay a small amount at a time.

If you are insured, then the insurance company will pay your medical bills but within limits depending on what kind of medical coverage you have. If you have no medical insurance and you incurred all these expenses due to a car accident, the party at fault will shoulder all medical expenses.

Yes, it's your responsibility. It's possible that you were just "shook up" at the scene, and not injured. However, it's impossible to determine on-scene if you are lethargic or disoriented because you are just stunned, or because you have some kind of head injury. If you were injured, and the paramedics left you there, and you died as a result, the paramedics would have lost their license and possibly been arrested.

Many patients say they don't want to go to the hospital and that they are fine, but it's the paramedic's butt on the line if they allow a patient to refuse transport who doesn't seem 100% capable of making that decision. Sometimes, the patient really isn't OK, and forcibly taking the patient to the hospital is what saved that patient's life. Sometimes the patient turns out to be just fine, and they were just drunk, on drugs (prescription or otherwise), shaken up from the trauma of the accident, or just normally confused.
However, since there was an ambulance transport and services were provided, there is still a bill to be paid.

I've had a patient who swore up and down that he was just fine, and refused to be transported to the hospital. They had to be taken in restraints. Turns out that patient had a serious head injury, got much worse on the way to the hospital, and died in the ER, despite our best efforts. Like I previously said, it's impossible to know in the field whether you will turn out to be like the above patient, or whether you are just fine. Better to err on the side of caution, then to risk death or disability.

It's not like I normally forcibly take patients to the hospital. As long as they are alert and oriented (able to converse, tell me what happened, who they are, the date/month/year, and where they are) and as long as they are of legal age to consent, then legally, I can't force them go go.

As far as the bill goes, your car insurance (or the at-fault car insurance), or your health insurance should be able to pay it.

If you honestly feel that you were taken to the hospital and were legally able to make the decision to refuse, you might consult an attorney. I hesitate to recommend that option, because odds are, you were a lot more confused then you remember being, but it is still an option.

I can only be me
Your responsible. you have to get an attorney 4 stuff like that. If thats happened to you or someone you know. You should do it because those bills are high! I know ppl who would sue.

Your bill. Your car insurance will pay for it. Can you imagine the lawsuit if they said okay we believe you and let you walk away and you die? They have good semaritan laws where they cant be sued.

Just remember they make the same amount of money if they take you to the hospital or not. They truly believed you needed help and did what was the best thing in their minds. You have no recourse for that. Other then to send them a thank you note and say thank you for caring.

*********** update **************

I dont know why I got a thumbs down might have been over you car insurance paying for it. I had my insurance license. In the state I live you have to have mandatory 25K medical insurance for accidents in a car crash. If you were hurt in a car crash your car company pays it before your heath insurance. Its accident insurance. If you dont have car insurance, well its illegal and you might be screwed I would call you car insurance most states require you have this.
