simpath | Question about pre-existing condition in health insurance? |
hi guys
i have a unique question regarding pre-existing condition coverage of health insurance. suppose i am from a country outside US (say India), and i have a pre-existing condition (say arthritis) for which i went to doctor in India and have been taking medicines prescribed by them, ever since i came to US about 3 years back. i never went to a doctor here for the disesase and got no treatment here. now if i go to a doctor here will it be considered a pre-existing condition, if i dont mention my disease history in India, and there is no history about the disease or treatment in USA during my last 3 years stay in this country?
kindly help a poor grad student.. :)) |

Where are you getting your medications from? Are they being shipped from India, or are they being purchased from a US pharmacy? Purchasing medications in the US that have been prescribed by a doctor does count as "treatment" in the insurance world.
Honestly, it will look very suspicious if you get a new insurance policy with no mention of arthritis, then all of a sudden you start filling prescriptions for arthritis medications.
I presume that you'll need to disclose to your new US doctor that you have arthritis - obviously, your doctor will need all of your medical history in order to be able to properly treat you. That information will become part of your medical records, which your insurer has the right to request and review.
Long story short - don't lie on your insurance application. There are many ways in which you could get caught, and it could cause significant problems for you. (It could void your policy entirely, cause the insurer to retract all payments to pharmacies, doctors, etc., and then those medical providers will come after you for reimbursement.) |

Yes, it is a pre-existing condition. However, if you have been insured in the U.S. for 3 years with no gaps, then you have sufficient prior creditable coverage so that it will be covered. Note that once you are uninsured for approximately 63 consecutive days, you lose all your prior creditable coverage history and must again have insurance for many months, sometimes as many as 18, before pre-existing conditions are again covered. |

Insurance companies consider a pre-existing condition a condition that has caused or would cause a prudent person seek medical care. If you are currently taking medication that is medical care. If you lie and get a policy the insurance company may not find out but if they do they'll rescind the policy. They will investigate any claims that might be a result of a pre-existing condition. You will then have to pay back anything they've paid out for you and will make it harder to find another policy.
You'll want to visit a local independent agent that can assist you in your particular situation. The agent will know or can find out whether the insurance company will cover your condition. |

Don't lie, it has a way to come back and bite you in the ***.
A lie now about this minor thing, might result in cancellation of your policy when major thing happens.
Check the rules with your insurance carrier, a "pre-existing" condition might be covered if it has been stable for a long time. |

Well, that's exactly the reason why most insurance companies won't insure a foreign national living here - there's no way to verify medical records.
Yes, it's a pre-existing condition, so you'd have a moral obligation to disclose it, if you have a concience. But the insurance companies can't get prior medical records, so they likely won't insure you anyway.
Unless, of course, you go on a group policy through an employer. |

It is a pre-existing condition, and must be disclosed if asked on the application. |
