Question for anyone that knows about insurance?
I am renting a garage that is not attached to the house and want to insure it. Would this be covered by the house insurance or would you need separate contents insurance as its not near the house. If you need seperate cover where would I go to get this?

You should get renters insurance. A coworkers apartment caught on fire but he had renters insurance for $25,000 so he got all new stuff. It is very inexpensive $20 or less a month, so worth it!

You need to insure only your property in the garage. You need renters insurance. Ask your agent for details.

You are not clear with your Q...
Are you going to rent a garage, or are your renting out your garage???
If you are renting out your garage, first and foremost you should know that its against the law to convert a garage into a living quarter and rent it out if you havent done so with permits.
If you do have permits which specifically states that the garage is considered living area on your title, then you are ok. In that case, you dont have to cover the personal property separately, as it will go under your homeowners insurance policy.

If you are going to rent someobody elses garage, then you have to get your own renters insurance which will cover your personal property coverage there. Just make sure that your landlord has the garage converted in the right way, and get a lease agreement from him.

Without knowing more details, I would say that you need seperate contents cover for the garage.
Essentially, the garage is not part of your house (not on the deeds) so its' contents do not qualify under your house cover.
You can get contents cover from almost all insurers. Allianz, Zurich etc.
