Marcjc | Question regarding life insurance . . .? |
Does a suicide automatically void a life insurance policy? The policy has been in effect for over 10 years. |
|

Financial JUSTICE
|
Nope. If person commits suicide during the first 2 years of the policy, the insurance company will only refund the premiums to the beneficiary. Since this policy been enforced for more than 10 years, it doesn't matter how the person dies. The insurance company will still pay the death claim. |

Suicide is not covered during an initial period, which is often two years. After that initial period, which specified in the policy’s suicide clause, suicide is treated the same as any other death. |

There is a suicide exclusion for life insurance policies, usually, it excludes suicide when it occurs within the first two years after the policy has been purchased.
In some states, it is only one year, like in Colorado.
Otherwise, suicide would be covered by the life insurance policy as a cause of death for which the beneficiary would receive the proceeds of the life insurance policy.
There is an Incontestable Clause in the policy stating that after the policy is in force for two years, the insurance company cannot void the policy because of misrepresentation or concealment by the insured in obtaining the policy.
For instance, if you lied on the application about not taking medication for a mental condition that may lead to suicide. After two years, the policy would be incontestable.
However, check the fine print in your policy for the complete answers, as some policies may be different.
I hope that helps! Best of luck to you. |

You have to look at the specifc policy. All policies have at least an initial exclusion period; some may totally exclude it. |

Tom Z- You may be speaking for your particular company, because that's not always the case.
Up until 1 month ago, the company I work for paid for any suicide death, as long as there was no direct evidence that the policy was purchased FOR THE SOLE REASON of killing yourself so your beneficiary could collect the money. That rule has now changed, any suicide within ONE year of purchasing the policy will not be a payable claim, but you would have your premiums returned from the first year. AFTER the first year, the same rule applies as far as a claim being paid as long as you can determine you didn't buy the life policy just to kill oneself.
Check with the company whom the life policy is written through, it will be the only way to find out for sure. Good Luck. |

Depends on the policy. Often it does but that's not 100% true. You'd have to check with the insurance provider and ask about the specific policy. |
