Questions about health insurance?
Hello guys, need some help here, we just found out that my girlfriend is pregnate! which is awesome! But heres the thing looking over her insurance she doesnt have short term disablility.. so, when she goes out on maternity she wont get paid... she called to add this, and they said she might get denied because its a pre-existing condition...

is there any other options we can try to get her on this, or if i try to add her to mine, will she get denied on that too?

What do we have for options..
Additional Details
I live in CT.

i figures she would have a hope... but i just wanted to see if there was anythign else that might be an option...

Where do you live? When I was pregnant and working in NJ, I got paid for 6 weeks before and 4 weeks after the birth from state disability. (Kind of like unemployment). Some states have this, some do not. You can look up your state on-line and search short term disability leave?

Don
No one will cover a pre-existing condition. Otherwise everyone would simply wait to wreck their car before buying auto insurance.

Steve D
Since she is pregnant, the odds are almost 100% she will be denied for any benefits based on pregnancy. This keeps people from waiting until they are pregnant, signing up, paying say $1,000 - $2,000 in premiums, having the insurance company pay all the bills (figure 3 days on the hospital plus doctors, plus pre-delivery costs) which could be $15,000 to $20,000 and then dropping coverage the day after. (Same goes with any diagnosis).

ok if i am reading this correctly, you are saying that she HAS insurance, but her insurance wont cover her WAGES. that's normal, insurance covers MEDICAL expenses, not wages. that would be something she needs to discuss with her employer. if they don't pay her wages while she is out, or if she doesn't have vacation time off... the only thing guaranteed is that they wont fire her while shes out on maternity, its against the law.

Amanda W
As far as pre-existing is concerned, federal law prohibits pregnancy from being considered a pre-existing condition. If you get married, you could add her to your policy and as long as your plan has maternity coverage, she will be covered. If she has medical insurance through her employer that has a maternity clause, she would be covered. Also, depending on how long you have been together (if you live together that is) you can check to see if your plan allows you to add a domestic partner. However, you may have to wait until your open enrollment to do this where marriage is a life status change and she could be added effective the date of your wedding.

I love cooking!
What about checking in to state insurance?

rtfm
If you marry her, you *might* be able to add her to your current insurance plan, even with the pre-existing condition.

Notice that I said *might*. If you actually consider doing this, please check with your employer or someone at your insurance company. Don't take my word for it!
