Raise in pay for not taking insurance benefits?
I just started a new job 3 weeks ago- I opted out of the health insurance plan because I'm covered under my wife. Should I ask for an extra dollar or two per hour since I'm not taking the health plan? I'm saving the company $800/mo by not taking the plan. They didn't know I wasn't going to take the plan when they hired me. I was told it's a law in massachusetts, but i can't find any thing to back that up.
Additional Details my wife pays about $400 / mo for the family plan...
Never hurts to ask. The worst that could happen is they would say "no". Good Luck.

I would say the odds are 99.999999% against you and they will probably hold it against you at some point for asking. Back in the day it was common for employers to give a portion of the premium they saved back to an employee when they opted out of coverage. Except for some really good union (if one can say that with out laughing) plans that has gone away years ago. Now its all a company can do to afford the current rates and they count on some opting out so they can afford the plans. You want more money you're better off asking for a raise. Asking for your health care premium savings comes off greedy to me

I'd doubt there's a law that says they must pay you more, but it certainly is a negotiating point.
The best time to bring that up would have been after they've made you an offer, as you do lose your bargaining power once you've accepted a salary.
Still, there's no harm in asking. Do you have to pay anything out of pocket to be on your wife's plan (very lucky and rare is the person whose company gives dependent coverage for free!)? If so and their answer is no I'd point out that you do have to pay to be on your wife's benefits and are saving the company that money.
If the answer is still no I'd bring it up at my 1 year review.
Good luck!

try lawguru.com or .org. they take time to answer but its all lawyers doing the answering (free).

It's probably a little too late for that, since you are already hired and your bargaining leverage is not so great now.
